Weight of stock landing gear
Funfly2005,
I finally got a chance to weigh the stock aluminum gear. My gear is 0.50 lbs! So by going to composite gear you save more than the weight of one servo!
Think I'll place my order tonight!

Finally have all the hardware
I've finally got all the hardware and am starting on assembly.
I ended up getting all aluminum screws, bolts, washers and nuts. To include the bolts for the BME44. Between that and the WM 160 size engine mount I have saved a little over half a pound.
Add to that a CF Pete Models spinner, Graphtec landing gear and tail gear, LiPoly batteries and I should be able to squeeze out a little over a pound of dead weight.
Needless to say I'm pretty jazzed. I will be doing a review with Pictures after it is all built. Should be ready to fly by the end of June.
Yee-Haw!!!!!

H9 80" Cap first flight
Well I got my first flight on Saturday. Wow, great plane. This is my first gasser. Man is it nice to pull up to the gas pump and leave with a gallon of fuel for under $2.00. Below are the specs
ZDZ 40RV
3/4 Standoffs
MenzS 21x8
Dave Brown Spinner
1650 ma 6 V. Nickel Metal Ignition Battery
2700 ma 6 V. Nickel Metal Reciever Battter
2@ Fromco Regulated Reliaswitches
2@ 811 Digital servos (Choke/Throttle)
5@ 8411 Digital Servos (Control Surfaces)
18 oz Fuel tank
Rocket City Control Horns
JR Prolinks w/ Rocket City ball links
All up dry weight is 15.4 lbs. I have not put on the wheel pants yet, so when I add those I should be between 15.5 and 15.6.

Question on the vertical fin
Fishgod,
did you do anything to lighten up yours? Or is it built per the instructions. 15 1/2 lbs is pretty cool. Must fly real good!
Question for anyone:
The vertical fin on mine does not point straight down the center of the fuselage. It is off by ~ 2* to the left.
Anybody else's like that? Is that normal?
I was trying to figure out why they would do that. I was wondering if it was to overcome the built in right thrust or something? :stupid:
Any comments, guesses (or snide remarks ) would be welcome.
Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
I built as per instructions. Maybe I just was lucky and got lighter wood in mine as compared to the ones that are coming out at 16.5 lbs. I did try to not use execive epoxy and such.

Fishgod, if you had the chance to test it - how was the vertical performance with the ZDZ 40?
Trying to decide between this engine and either the ZDZ 50 or DA 50.
Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
The 40 is great power but If I were buying an engine for this plane I would put a 50 in it. Only slightly heavier and more power. The plane with the 40 will go straight up until I tell it not to. But If you plan on doing alot of 3d then go with the 50.

I have also changed all the bolts and screws on the engine to red anodized aluminum. Looks real nice.
I actually understated the weight savings. I forgot to put all the steel servo screws, motor mount screws and some miscellaneous screws in the one bag, and had put extra aluminum screws in the other.
Should be real interesting!

Scott, be careful using those aluminum bolts. We have stopped using them in some applications due to breakage. Where did you buy your aluminum bolts?

Thanks for the concern Keith
The engine and Carb mounting bolts came from Indigo Sports. Good people and high quality fasteners.
The small carb screws are from Microfasteners. Good people, average grade fasteners.

Scott
