RE: Extremeflight 88.5" Extra - Build and Fly
Since my control horns are still not dry yet I decided to get the surfaces ready for the control horns.
This is pretty painless.. just locate the control arm holes on the surface and then use the square control horn base as a ruler to trace and cut away the covering. You want as much wood exposed as possible, but I left a small edge of covering so when you iron down the road it doesn't shrink away from the control horn base.
Also did the rudder while I had the blade handy.

Servos aren't here yet, but decided I would get the fuel proofing etc out of the way now and then begin hinging.
So far I haven't found so much as a hint of a wrinkle in the covering, however I went over it just to make sure.
I then used a hot sodering iron and cut out the slots for the servo arms. Once that was complete I used some thin CA and went over the entire servo mount and the anti-rotation pins. After then I thinned out some 30 min epoxy with some alcohol and gave a thin coat to the exposed wood inside of the elevator as suggested by the manual.

Time to get those freshly painted contol horns on..
First I put a 4 40 bolt and nut on the horn to keep make sure it's straight and then I trial fit it... everything lined up so I broke out the 30 min epoxy and tried to get a fair amount down inside of the elevator. I used a small toothpick to make sure I coated the sides and then put a coating on the horns themselves and fitted them into place.
The paint on the horns ended up matching the grey stripes on the fuse and rudder almost perfectly

Since the control horns are basically dry I decided to epoxy the aileron control horns in place.
Same process as the elevator...

Well on to hinging...
Gathered everything thing up and began taping.
I like to use gorilla glue, some blue painters tape and some 3-in-one oil.
Goes by pretty quick and as long as you dont use too much gorilla glue you dont have a big mess to clean up.

Hey Jake,
Just ordered my blue and yellow one this morning, 5 left all 35 red white and blue ones sold next batch late Jan early Feb.< I am stoqued I can not wait to get my hands on this baby. Quick question how do you use gorilla glue on hinges without it foaming out onto hinge point??? I also have the Brillelli 60 coming with it. What length stand offs are you planning if you have got that far. Going with smoke?

Pacer hinge glue is my favorite. Strong as hell and cleans up with water.....no foaming. The manual says to use the Zpoxy which I might try on the hinges. I'm kind of spoiled by the Pacer hinge glue now after doing two 30%'rs using it.

Hey guys.. I do have some updatd pics as I have made a little more progress, but have been quite busy.
The horns actually matched even closer until I went and clear coated them.. they got a little darker Still look pretty good on it though I also need some get some vinyl bling, just haven't decided what I am going to do there yet.
3DAP: You will need 1 3/4" standoffs for the Brillelli 60. I haven't mounted mine yet since carbs were on back order and I don't have it hear yet. I am also waiting on servos which I hope will be here today.. once servos arrive and engine is here I will be done.
The biggest problem with a non foaming glue is that if after you hinge it all the epoxy or glue falls off the hinge depending on the way you have it positioned. Gravity pulls the epoxy away from the hinge point while it's drying. You still get some good bite, but with a foaming glue you dont have to worry about that part. I have heard several ppl use that pacer stuff as well... I haven't tried it yet.

On to mounting the gear...
I didn't have a tailwheel around to use the supplied tail wheel setup, I decided to use a PeteModels Tailwheel I had.

No it doesnt come with axles or wheels... Chris couldn't come up with any that were light, a good price, and actually held up.
It includes the assembly for the tail wheel.. but no actual wheel.

Hrmm give him a call 320-249-7420
He had computer problems (dead motherboard in his laptop) about 3 weeks ago.. I helped him get things back together on the new computer but his invoicing program update that is needed for Vista isn't working properly. He lost a bunch of days and has been swampped.. email might have been lost in the transfer to new computer if it came in while exporting the pst.
You can order it from either really.

Looks even better in person!
I haven't hooked it up to my radio yet to start any programming but Chris let me know today that you should put the balllinks on the highest hole on the control horns for the elevators so that you can get better resolution. You will still be able to get full throws no problem. Will save me some playing
