RE: NEW Composite YAK 55 2.12m DA 50
Reg muffler, traded a heli for the engine and muffler came with it :-). Engine is in great shape inside. When I put it on the bench it would not take fuel past half throttle, messed with screws a little and decided carb needed a good cleaning. I put a new carb on and thing is like new. I was torn about getting the pipe and was lazy, figured I could always get it later :-).

Has anyone built this plane with the canister muffler and header supplied by CompARF? I'm working on mine now, and the header turns back immediately out of the flange, not allowing enough room to get a bolt through the flange and into the rear mounting hole.
I guess I'll try a stud and nut instead of the bolt, but I don't know if I'll have enough room to get a wrench on it.

I had the same problem with the header. I cut of slot in the header flange from the hole outward. The I flattened the screw head with a grinder so I could get ahold of it with small vice grips or needle nose pliers. Install the bolt first in the motor with locktite. Slide the header on and install the second bolt. Then I tighened the flatened bolt as best I could.
I have maybe 6 flights on mine. Airlerons are not nearly as effective as the Extra nor does it seem to track as well but I am shifting the cg a little and going to play with the thrust. However, with the larger wing area, it does slow down to a crawl. You definitely feel the couple of more pounds over the Extra but it handles it well with the DA-50.

RE: NEW Composite YAK 55 2.12m DA 50
I got a few flights on my Yak and it flies beautifully! It seems to have more coupling issues than my 2.6m Yak, but that one had nearly nil coupling.
My god, my brand new ZDZ 50NG on a full length carbon fiber tuned pipe is crazy. Sounds like a racing go cart and has better throttle response than any engine/exhaust combo that I have ever had.
I am currently ripping a 22x8 and I am still so rich that I am still seeing smoke from my exhaust. Wow is all I can say!!! Seems like this engine was made on a good day.
Curious to see what it will do with a 3 blade!
As always, this comp arf is a beautiful flying plane and makes me look much better than I am. And no one else has one at the field!
Good flying!!!

Well, in the last 3 weeks, I've finally got the motor and canister mounted, I decided to put a stud in the header flange and a nut on top of that to hold the back of the flange.
I also mounted the canopy, got the stab tube in from CompARF, cut the holes for the elevator servos, and got a few other odds and ends done. All together, probably 6 hours worth of work done, but its taken 3 weeks... I just haven't been in a mood to build.
All I have now is the electronics inside the fuse, and we'll be ready for a maiden. Maybe this weekend.

OK.. got the maiden flights in. The motor's still way rich, but it looks like the DA50 will work great on the plane. Just a click of up elevator required to fly level, and I do need to go back in and add some more right thrust. Other than that, it seems like great plane.
I don't know that I would build another CompARF 50cc plane... too many things left undone at the factory, and the wing bolt nuts are just too close to the wing tube and fuel tank to get an adult hand in there and loosen/tighten the nut.
It does seem very managable in the air, slows down very nicely, and with a little fine tuning, I think it will be a winner. I did have a wheel and wheelpant fall off on the second flight. I loosened the locknut just a tad during the build because the wheel was tough to turn. I guess that loosening must have taken the threads off of the nylon bushing on the washer.... I'll try to find a longer bolt for both wheels and probably add loctite to the locknut just in case. I was able to land the plane on the asphault runway with no damage, just flattened out the bottom of the landing gear a bit.

RE: NEW Composite YAK 55 2.12m DA 50
I got several more flights in today, thanks to calm winds and an unusual completely empty airfield. I had leaned the motor out a little, and added some right thrust to the motor. I leaned it a little more at the field, and now its responding pretty well, but with just a little gurgling at the high end. I'll leave it there for the first gallon or so.
The DA-50 on a can has more than enough power for the plane. It will go vertical for as long as you wish, and pull out of a hover quickly. With no differential in the ailerons yet, its rolling almost axialy, even at low speeds. One note for those looking for the typical CompARF aileron squealing... this plane doesn't do it. Its made the same as the others, but for some reason, it just doesn't squeal. probably not enough space in the hinge for the air to do whatever it does in the larger planes.
So far, its coming along nicely. I'm waiting on a new receiver to come in before I do too much more dialing in. I've got a Y-cable on the elevators right now, (all I had when I got to that point) and I want to run individual channels so I can get them set perfectly alike. Right now, one of them has probably 10% more throw than the other. Another dedicated channel will resolve that quickly.
The plane flies very well at slow speeds, and slows down nicely for landings. My larger Edge will literally float 1500 feet on our 1000 foot strip. This plane will glide in nice and slow, and sit down nicely on the wheels for landing.

RE: NEW Composite YAK 55 2.12m DA 50
Eventually!
I got my maiden done yesterday and everything went superb. This is one of the most uncritical maidens I have ever made. It flyes like a dream. The most impressive thing was the landing. Couldn't in my wildest dreams imagine that it could fly so slowly.
Did three flights yesterday and now I can't wait to get back on the field again. The engine is running quite rich and so far I have just ran half a gallon through the DA. Will wait until I have used 1-1.5 gallon before I start to lean it.
Setup:
Engine: DA-50 with MTW canister (500cc tank)
Servos: Dymond DS9900 BB MG digital/coreless (17kg/0.15s/6V) [link=http://www.modellhobby.de/Dymond/DYMOND-DS-9900-BB-MG-digital-coreless.htm?shop=k_staufenb_e&SessionId=&a=article&ProdNr=03119003&t=130&p=75&c=75]Dymond Servos[/link]
Acc.: 2x2000mAh for the receiver and 1x2000 mAh for the ignition
Swithces: PowerBox sensor for the receiver and PowerBox Digiswitch for the ignition [link=http://www.powerbox-systems.com]PowerBox Systems[/link]

just emailed pics. I seem to have plenty of power with muffler, but really don't hover. Good vertical and still running a little rich I think.

Hello,
I bought on also and i'm going to make it electric with A123 cells and with a Strecker motor. Wenn it's ready i will post some pics.

If anyone's looking for a DA-50, MTW canister and header for the 2.1 Yak... send me a PM. I had an electronic problem on takeoff with mine a month or so ago, and wound up having to ditch the plane. I did cut the motor off, so its not damaged, but the rest of the plane is trash.
The header is bent a little, but it should be able to be straightened out without too much trouble. The motor and canister are in great shape... less than 10 flights total. All were purchased from DA when I built the plane, about 2 months ago. I'll sell the engine, spinner, canister and tube for $600. I haven't tried to start the motor since the crash, but it looks unharmed.

RE: NEW Composite YAK 55 2.12m DA 50
Test flew my new Comp ARF YAK today with a Neu 1521 1.5y 6.7:1 HD for power. AUW came in at 17 1/2 LBS. Everything went as planned with zero problems! My electric version is a lot more powerful than then stock setup with the DA50.
Motor Neu 1521 1.5y 6.7:1 HD
ESC Turnigy Sentilon 100Amp-HV
Pack TP 12s 5000mAh
Prop XOAR 24x10
ASL 710 feet, 82 Fahrenheit
I started with low timing on the ESC for the first flight and obtained the following figures.
44.9 Volts
73.5 Amps
3300 Watts
6016 RPM
I then upped the timing to Mid on the ESC and recorded these numbers.
44.7 Volts
77.7 Amps
3473 Watts
6127 RPM
Power was excellent on both setups but you could certainly tell the difference between the two. I may try high timing the next time I fly it because you can never have enough power, right?
