Can you take a picture of you plane from the front, back and sides. I think it is a dihedral issue.

If you are used to flying an Extra or Yak or any other plane of that type you may be expecting to much from the Gee Bee. This is not a Carden Extra! When I fly my Waco for a while and then jump back on the Gee Bee it scares the pants off me.

I will check my dihedral, C/G and a few other things and we can compare.

Can you tell me how mutch EXPO you fly on each rudder? 20%? 30%? 40%?

Do you fly a MIX at aileron & left/right rudder?

I have 20% on ailerons, 0% on elevators and 30% on rudder. Throws are per plans.

Thanks for the info. Have a Byron Quarter Scale GB that has been waiting for the right pilot. I think that I have found that in my Grandson Westin. Hope to test fly this spring.

Was wondering if someone could grab a micrometer and measure the diameter of both the flying wires and the tensioning cable on their Composite-Arf Gee Bee for me. I can't find the actual diameter anywhere in the manual I downloaded. The reason is that I have a framed up Hostetler R2 33% and have just started rigging functional flying wires. The cable that I am using looks way too thin for the job and I can't get a read on the flying wire diameter from the pictures. My email is [email protected]

There is some great info in this thread. If I had to do it over again I would have gone with the Composite-ARF Gee Bee as this Hostetler R2 is starting to become endless. Thanks. Alex

The wires from landing gear to belly are 2mm stranded cable.
The others are actually streamlined and are 4.7 mm wide by 1.1 mm thick.

Hey Richard, its jimmy to thank you for the email and this build/discussions link. Its kind a crazy to read, one thread you get all hot to order one then the next thread your glad your not committed!! Looks to me like a couple of the first time guys have some issues that are not experienced by everyone else. I believe the theory of the dummy radial on Hannes GB is part of his issue. I have a friend with a Weeks Super solution that had some similar flight problems and it turned out to be cowl related. Air going into the cowl was causing the plane to dive and pitch, the cowl was adjusted to allow the air to flow through the cowl and the problem was corrected, proof that the air flow across the cowl can make a difference. Anyway, do you have any new pics of the new GB to post, this entire post is a wealth of information, I love it:D

I do not have any new pics to post. My second Gee Bee has been making incremental progress as I have been too involved in other projects.
As far as "new" Gee Bee, keep in mind the latest CARF kits are warmed-over versions of what has always been offered. The improvements are very welcome, but the basic design has not changed.
IF you are a Gee Bee R1 or R2 fanatic, you simply cannot go wrong with the CARF. All the difficult issues have been solved for you, but the kit is still challenging enough to offer great satisfaction with the finished product.

I have spoken with a long time aircraft designer and scratch builder in our club, George Miller. He has a long history of successful competition, an RC aircraft company, and building one-off designs for George Lucas' ILM Productions. Mr. Miller also agrees that the dummy radial must have been the primary culprit causing the Gee Bee to hunt all over the sky for a line to follow. We just could not arrive at any other conclusions.

My Dihedral remained the same. Weight went down by a pound (due to added weight up front to balance). Throws and expo remained the same.

The only other change I made to mine when I went from DA150 down to DA100 was the smaller prop, which may also have contributed to less airflow around the aircraft and over the tail feathers. This theory is a stretch, however, since once the airplane was at speed, it shouldn't matter whether you have a 30" or 28" prop up front.
The dummy radial seems to be the only logical explanation as to WHY my Gee Bee's flight characteristics took such a nasty turn for the worse when I went to the smaller engine.

MY dummy radial was easily removable. I WISH[>:]I had taken the time to try a flight with no dummy up front and I could have proved this theory[:@]
Alas, I sold Gee Bee #1 before this even occured to me[&o]

Anyone out there up for the challenge??? You could resolve this issue for us all!!!:D

Glad to hear from you again Richard. I felt all along that the Dummy Radial was some (if not all) of the ill handling you and others have experienced. Along with the issue Dingus had with the large spinner it is evident that a disruption of airflow around the fuse is caused from mods to the natural airflow around/through the cowling.. The short 3.5:1 aspect ration of the GB probably multiplies the affect which would not be noticeable on a longer momented streamlined radial craft such as a Suk/ Yak/ Waco/ etc...

Hey there... Just wondering if anyone has seen The Carf Gee Bee fly on a Moki 250 yet? This is the combination Im going with. I already have an older version of the Carf Gee Bee New in the box, But Im going to buy a new updated version and start my Build. Only 500 bucks away from delivery of my Moki 250! Woo hoo!!!!!!! If anyone is interested in a new Older version Gee Bee, Ill sell it cheep. let me know. Thinking about 500.00... Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

I have been communicating with Hannes who just flew his Gee Bee with 3W106 and DUMMY RADIAL and experienced an equally underwear-filling[:-], ill-handling[:@], hair-raising[X(] flight!

I have asked that he remove the dummy radial from his R2, if possible, and fly it again without changing anything else. This may resolve a major mystery for all of us.

As I told Hannes, my Gee Bee was no picnic with the DA150, but at least it was predictable.
With the DA100 and dummy radial, it took everything I had to fly and land it. It simply was not fun.

I tried various throttle/rudder mixing and additional expo, but nothing helped.
Dirty Dingus suggested that dihedral can make a dramatic difference, but I never touched dihedral in the engine swap.

Unfortunately, I sold it before it ever occurred to me that the dummy radial might be the cause of the erratic handling.

YES, I actually have a video of the CARF Gee Bee flying with a Moki 215.
I wish I could find the link - I would share it with you. IF you get me your email, I will send it.

The plane flies well and does not appear to exhibit any obious ill handling.

I did the weight calculations, and comparing a 3W157 with canisters to a Moki 215, there is only a 1.3 pound difference.
So, the increase in wing loading is not super significant.

As you would expect, the sound and look is simply fantastic.
