Rich,
I have moved from near Nimes in the South of France to Canterbury in S.E. England. The climate here is cooler and wetter, but as an upside I get to fly off green grass and not a gravel runway! However, there's less sun and wine is much more expensive than in France.

The phrases "Cold feet", and "jitters" both work for us Brits.
Keep up the good work!

Rich,

I too would like to chime in here and tell you how much I appreciate all the extra effort you go to to share your build with us. sharing your expertise and process will surely save many of us countless hours and improve all of our projects. I just wish I had the time to really go at it. Thanks so much. On the nacelles....
The back tapered fiberglass pieces I assume you made yourself. I was able to buy the fuse nose and the cowls. I can't remember if you shares this process with us earlier in the thread. I wish I could figure a way to archive this thread with all the photos as it would make a great manual of sorts since there is none.

Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks so much Joel............I need feedback like that.....keeps me moving forward.......I'am not a young guy any more.....I need to stay motivated instead of rolling-over, like most people my age...........speaking of age.......when people ask my age, I just tell them that I was born fifteen months before the big one.......wwII........if they are close to my age then they can figure it out in their head..........if they are from the new generation........then out comes the calculator........

....To answer your question about the make-up of the nacelle end cones?............they are made up of 21 sections of 3/8" balsa covered with 1/2 oz glass cloth and applied with green tinted nitrate aircraft dope........

....I too was able to purchase the two cowl's, the nose cap, the vacuumed formed canopy and the tail stinger.......speaking of the stinger........it will have to be modified to fit the tail post........a 3/8" section has to be removed from the top down and joined back together with 1/2 oz cloth applied to the interior wall.....

Joel, I like your idea of putting together a "Build Manual"........I'am not sure how to go about it tho............maybe someone on this thread will have expertise?

Thanks again Joel for your input...........I suppose it will all come to an end by Aug..........but, I will continue to post the roll out and first test flight.........and, her showing at the Bomber Field Event in Sept.............Monaville Texas!!!!!!...........yea-haaaaaaaaaaa!

Rich,

This is the only photo I have. I believe it's the correct one? Not sure though.

kit comes with great full size plans, foam wing cores, and the nacell pieces, four of them. Not sure what else.

To large for my likings.

....That's great Charles!.......do you plan to build her ?..........is she a part of a kit collection?.............the reason I ask is that I also collect anything and everything related to this aircraft........even real parts to use as reference material..........I have posted pic's of some of my collection in earlier threads........if you do not plan to build or just hang onto her.............would you be interested in selling?............I personally would love to see you start a build thread on her.....she in not a Don Smith.....but that doe's not matter..........she is still a Cessna t-50 Bobcat!!!!!............and.........I have plenty of reference material to supply you with if you decide to build........

Thanks again Charles for this wonderful information..........I will be searching Google for info on this little known kit...........

....Sorry for the late response Steve........I too worked at the Vought plant in Grand Prairie Texas..........from Sept 18 1968 to June 30 1998.........I hired in as a graphic illustrator in the presentations department....we werebasically an inplant art department..........no computers!!........all work was done on the board.......drafting machines, straight edges, 30/60 triangles....and 90/45 triangles.......and repedo-graph pens......and ruling pens.......not to mention the ball point pens.....and india ink!!....................I sorta miss those days..........I still do have a lot of these old tools and they come in handy every now and then........

....Steve, how about a progress report on warbirdrcer?..........is he planning to build a military?..........private scheme?.........commercial?............it sounds that he has jumped in with all fours and wasting no time.........that's great!!..........sure would like to see photos of his latest progress.........

Thanks so much!!

rhsmrt50,

Actually I am Steve (Warbirdrcer) and Ray is the senior master builder RPRCBuilder. We really like the silver and green color scheme you provided for uniqueness and visibility.

While I was at LTV in the 80’s I was a sheet metal guys working the floor driving those little rivets all day. Was a lot of fun and worked with a lot of really good people.

Great work! And thanks also for the photos. I know they take extra time, but I know I speak for others when I say they are very helpful. The really nice thing is they will be helpful for others years from now too.

I see you have chosen to lighten your ribs to resemble the full scale look. Nice touch, I have been looking at ours to see how we could best accomplish the same. RPRCBuilder and I have discussed using hole saws to do this, but wow, yours look great.

The progress is looking good. I can’t wait to see the flight videos.

Bomber Field in September, now that is tempting since some other friends are going too.

Steve

......Thanks for straightening me out on the screen name.......I got it now............I still workwith a bunch of Vought retireesrestoreing early Vought aircraft.....we meet there every Tue and Wedfor half aday......most of the guyshave sheetmetal experience.....I am one of their cockpit guys.......mostly replicating the instruments...

Thanks forthe complement........it is a little trouble in thefact that I have to keep reminding myself to takephotos before I move on to the next step.....other than that it has been fundocumenting the progressaswell as the build......

Steve thehole saw works great on the hard wood parts but tends to tear the balsa parts dueto it's courses tooh pattern.......I usedan adjustable circle cutter chucked in a drill press......it uses a cutting blade instead of teeth and does avery good job.........Ithink I bought mine at Ace hardware or Harbor Freight.....they had one for cuttingsmall circles and one large ones.........they were not expensive so I got one of each, but have yet to use the large one.....

I found very early on that this model could weigh between 30 and 35 lb.........and since I am going full scale that became a concern for me........so I decided to take a close look at the plans before the build to see where I could save weight and also to make modifications to bring her up to a more scale configuration......I plan for a full scale cocpit......butthe layout of the wing center section made that impossible........so, I completely re-designed the entire wing to incorporate the rear spar that ran full span and paraelle to the main spar...........The real Bobcat had a dropped floor and both spars ran thru the cockpit and cabin, in fact the two front seats were mounted to the front spar and the rear seat was mounted on top ofthe rear spar.......they were both covered with carpet as the floor was....so, most people thought theywere just seat risers...........tobetter clarify that take a look back at the wing center sectionand notice that there is not one.........just the twospars and the droppedfloor.............While Iwasat it Steve, I decided to build a three peicewing...........of course the real aircraft also utilized a one peice wing........studying the plans I realized that the seperation lines of thewing panels could be hidden by the massive nacellesso they would not show.....this was important to maintain the proper scale outline.......My reasonfor this change were several......it made it easier to transport.........I did not have to make a bunch of wire connections at the field except at the wing panels.......and I did not have to turn the plane upside down to install the wing..........However, the entire wingwill be removable by way of four stainless steelscrews at the same locations as the original ....

Thanks for the feedback Steve........keep us posted onRPRCBuilde build...

Rich.

....Steve, I am posting a group of photos that Mike just sent to me of a Bobcat fuselage front cockpit section and forward........it has been listed on Ebay.......the photos are full of great detail that I have even been searching for.....of course I do not plan to bid on her....but the seller has posted some really great close-up's of detail I have been searching for when I get to the interior...........anyway, some of the pic's show the main spar with the pilots seats in place on top......and the very deep dropped cabin floor as I discussed in the last post..........I know that most of you will not be planning to go this far with the detail........that's just me......but I am making it available so you guys can pick and choose bits and peices here and there to enhance your beautiful T-50.........so.....with that thought in mind, here are the latest photos of the parts for sale on Ebay..........enjoy...

Rich,

Thanks for those pics. I had been looking for a clean unshaded shot of the rudder petals for some time for a texture map.

Thanks

....Here are a few photos of Jon Larson's Don Smith UC-78..........this a model of the UC-78 that served at Mintor field from 1942 to the end of the war......this is how she looked back then with the exception of the buzz number and correct color of the star and bars.......which turned out to be '**884" for the buzz no........and the red outline applied to the star and bars.........the real aircraft has long been converted to a replica of the Sky King Songbird, and I'am sure most of you have seen pic's of her from time to time.........I have numerous photos of her that I will scan and post soon.........in the meantime, I will post photos of his model.....enjoy.
