RE: Hostetler Cessna 150/152
Been back from vacation now about a week. I went to the LHS and picked up some Estes model rocket BT-20 rocket tubes and installed them in the recess. Also today I framed up the R/H aileron. I am leaving the top sheeting off until I am ready to install the Robart hinges. The areas that the hinges will be installed need to be reinforced. Also took a picture of my new to me used DA-100.

RE: Hostetler Cessna 150/152
Here is the initial layout after cutting the aft tabs for the aileron. Question Since the wing will be fully sheeted is spar webbing needed? All my other builds have had an open wing covered in shrink material like ultra-cote etc. Other than added weight is adding the spar webbing ok or just sheet the wing with balsa and leave the spar bays unwebbed?
Thanks

Yeah, I always do shear webs on the spars. Depending on the plane, it may get a box spar instead of C channel. I've had wings on arfs break in high G turns. It was only a 40"ws electric but the wings folded so hard it you could hear it slap. Later inspection showed no shear webs at all.

If not all the way, I'm thinking I would at least out a rib past the wing strut mounts. You get a lot of strength for a little weight penalty. This is a good sized plane and I'm sure the struts are functional. It would be a little extra insurance. I'm curious, what do the plans call for?

Plans do not call for webbing. The struts are cosmetic only. I think I am only going to web the aft side of the spar. The wing is fully sheeted and I will be fiberglassing the entire airframe after construction is complete.

RE: Hostetler Cessna 150/152
And the rest of the pictures from today's progress. I made a mistake when I placed the ribs for the flaps. I had the flap turned 180 degrees. If you look at the flap ribs they do not match up. I added a support block to the rib so the flap hinge points will line up properly.
I was too far along to remove the ribs and it would have torn up some structure getting them out. So a slight modification was in order and it worked out great.
Enjoy

I bought it in an Xacto knife kit back in 1984 when I first got in the hobby. I would think it is still in the knife kit. It is the big one in a wooden box. Comes with 3 xacto knives a block plane a scroll saw and a bunch of blades of different assortments.

Well I have been busy planking the bottom half of the wing. The R/H aileron is glassed and looks good. Pictures are not loading. I am going out of town tomorrow forawhile and the next thingI need to do is build theaileron servo mount and R/H flap servo mount, then cut the hatch out for the aileron servo.
Also need to sand the filler install and profile the leading edge, thenplank the top half of the wing repeat with filler then fiberglass the wing and start onthe left wing.
More later.

A wing that size held on by 4 little boxes made up by formers is sure to break.......I challenge you to build one and put all that time and money into and fly it without those struts.....Be sure they are secured well if you decide that they are necessary........Just pick the wing up by the strut location without the struts....cross your fingers......This is just my humble opinion......anyone out there fly without the struts????
You might want to ask Wendell about them.....I've communicated with him....nice guy.

First off Thank you for your response. I will not fly this plane without the struts just because it is a 152 and it needs the struts to have it's looks. However I will add that the spars are beefy and the spar joiners are massive units built out of ply. Also the spars are boxed in and glassed on both the forward and aft spars. The struts are made out of balsa and I dont see where they add any rigidity to the wing. I was thinking about using some aerodynamic aluminum instead for the struts but am not there yet.
I can attest that the center ply that joins the wing will support both the wing and airframe. That said I will not be flying without struts. I have spoken with Mr. hostetler in the past and he is a very nice person.
I have not spoken with anyone who has flown this bird without the struts but also have not spoken with anyone who is flying with the struts. LOL. Oh well, it really does not matter in any case as I won't be flying without either the "as per plans" or my idea of a strut.

RE: Hostetler Cessna 150/152
Balsa..........That's interesting. Mine came with hardwood, which I shaped and put alumunium shaped struts from K&S tubing over them.
My pieces that went into the box were only 6 inches long and were not of plywood....I guess it means a lot as to who cuts your kit too.
I understand what you are saying.....I still wouldn't take the chance....anchor both ends of that strut firmly......Lots of luck with your plane....I like mine.
I used too much glass epoxy andpaintand it came it at a whopping 36 pounds. I'm more careful now.

I will recheck my plans and kit. If you say it ishardwood it probably is. I for some reason remember seeing some balsa inthe box that said strut. Might be the outer cover. My kit is cut by precision cut kits. So whatever Hostetler called for will be what the struts are made from. I sent you a PM and if you have any pre and post construction pictures, please feel free to show them here. If you have any videos can you post us a link or post them here.
Same goes for anyone that has or is building a 150/152. Please post here.
Thanks

RE: Hostetler Cessna 150/152
Well I just finished sanding the bottom side of the R/H wing. Smooth as a babies behind.
Question to those who know: Now the wing is sanded. Prior to laying cloth. Is it ok to lay the cloth on as is or should a sealer be used prior to the cloth? If so what sealer should I use? Any suggestions are welcome. But I ask only opinions of guys who have done this before.
Thanks in advance
