Hello Ken or anyone who has used spray cans, How many cans of Krylon did it take to paint your Hostetler SD? I was talking with my buddy who is also building one of these and we were curious. Thanks Joe

Hello Ken or anyone watching or building one of these SD's, the plans show a cross brace F-9 going through the fin. Does it really? lt doesn't appear that there any other builders right now other than my buddy and myself, if I don't get a timely response I'll just call Wendell.

Ludfleet: On my 30% I did not. Enclosed is a photo of how mine looks. I ran the cross brace below the fin plate as shown and stopped everthing there.

Hi Joe,
As I see it F9 is simply a rectangular box made of sticks located between the pen and pencil on the photo. It has nothing to do with the fin. Do you see it that way now?
Edit: I am reconsidering my statement above. I believe F9 is from half way between the pencil and pen down since the fin is sheeted. It forms part of the base that the fin rests on. I think.
Happy Thanksgiving

Hey Ken
You once asked for outdoor shots of the SDs I built for the guys, here are a few of one of them. Including the proud owner. Unfortunately, the quality is not good since he shot them with a cellphone camera...
Seems that he had a bad landing which bent the LG a little...otherwise ok.

Hi Marcus,
The SD looks really good. And the owner looks proud of it.
I don't think the problem with the photos was as much the cell phone as the gray cloudy day. With the proper editing software the photos can be improved a bit. I selected a few photos to manipulate. Here they are.

Joe: I want you to know that there are likely many watching this thread in the background(such as myself) who only dream of building such an expertly handcrafted thing of beauty. Please keep up the build posts cuz' I'm addicted!!

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Hey Southmontainbob!! Welcome here!
Don't be so humble, anyone who's built a Goldberg Cub can build a Decathlon. Shy of the size? Don't - it's just more wood and bigger hardware, that's all.
If you're not used to cutting wood, get a ready cut kit from any of the kitcutters out there and start building. You'll see how pleasant it is and how easy it turns out into a beautiful, large model.
And flying is even easier than smaller models.
Give it a try and post the pix here, and we all will be pleased to help whenever it's necessary!
Marcus
p.s. btw, we all go by our real names here...what's yours?

Marcus:
Thanks for the encouraging words. I haven't actually built the Piper Cub as I just picked up the kit last week. It's a Christmas present from my wife (sort of, anyway cuz' I picked it up myself) and I can't actually get going on it 'till Christmas ( boss's orders!)I'm running out of buils space, but there's two other planes on my build table at the moment. I have Hostettlers plans for his 33% Cub as well. I know it's not a Decathlon , but gosh it's big! I may get that started soon, too. I live on a lake in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley region, so all aircraft will be float equipped which brings me to a question I have wondered about for awhile.... should I install a larger engine than the plans specify or simply go for an engine at the top end of the recommendation for the specific kit? I have a set of plans for floats that are 5' long and although they will probably build fairly light, I am worried about not having sufficient power.
Thanks.
Bob (southmountainbob)
PS My favorite part of this thread is the photos.... a picture speaks a thousand words so please keep the photos coming!

that's great news. Go ahead and build them all, and later build a Decathlon as well.
Nothing flies like a Cub on floats. Except for a Decathlon, of course...
I am thinking of buildin a set of floats for my Decathlon as well.
About the best engine size, I would definitely go to the top recommended engine size , especially because of the added drag, not necessaily the added weight.

Ken: You bet its cold here! We use the Celcius scale and right now its minus 11 and snowing. Thats somewhere around 12 degrees Fahrenheit , I think. The lake is beginning to freeze so its almost ski time .... not floats!!
Marcus: You are right .... it's not the weight of the floats I should be concerned with , its the drag. Any concerns with CG being lower?

a lower CG will only be of benefit, since it will enhance the inherent stability of the plane. Think of a pendulum.
Wow, I envy you! A lifelong dream of mine is to have a white Christmas!
I've been in many places around the world, even in the winter and snow. But never at Christmas time.
We live in the south of Brazil, it's summer time here and we all go to the beach during the holidays! 40 deg Celsius in the shadow is common during this time !!

Marcus:
That's hilarious that you go to the beach at Christmas time in 40 degree weather, but where else would one go? I'm trying to arrange a vacation in the Caribbean for the dead of winter to get away from this cold and snow.
On Topic question: are there any "rules" to pay attention to when assembling wooden aircraft as pertains to what sort of glue or epoxy is used where? I use thin and medium ca as well as 5 minute and 30 minute epoxy and only recently was I told that 30 minute epoxy is stronger than 5 minute epoxy. Who knew?

longer setting glues always will be stronger than the fast ones. But you're on the right way with 5- and 30-minute epoxies. Use them where you need some "softness" to avoid cracking when under vibrations or where you need time to assembly the parts.
Otherwise use CA...
I recall the time when we used Ambroid Cement or similar, every assembly must be pinned together and left to dry, a plane took an eternity to be built...enters CA, and model building turns into a totally new adventure!
Have a nice building season!

Bob,
At least 50% of my planes are built with Titebond II. It takes longer to set up but the bond is very strong and the glue is cheap compared to CA. I use a lot of CA but where I can spare the time I use Titebond II. When putting on cap strips put a dot of CA at each end and a bead of Titebond II on the top of the rib. I have to use a respirator with an organic vapor cartridge when I use CA because I am so allergic to it.
I find the 6 minute epoxy to be as strong as the 30 minute kind. Sometime glue a set of balsa pieces together with 5 and 30 minute epoxy. Allow them to fully cure. Now break them apart and see if the bond breaks or the wood breaks off of the bond.
It's 11.7 degc here today.
Take a look at this other thread that I started:

I'm subscribed to that thread as well!! You guys amaze me. I can only dream of affording to buy a kit from AMR. Maybe I'll be remembered in someone's will!?!? I absolutely love the colour scheme.

Ken and Ross did an absolutely superb job on their 42%. They well deserved the many awards that plane already received and will receive in the future!!
Mine is "only" 30%...
If you ever think of buying one 30% already built or ARC, drop me a line, take a look at my website at www.marcusmodelfactory.com
