RE: 42% Super Decathlon Build
Morning Jack, here is a link to the DA website which has the drawings and measurements for the DA-150. This should help you compare the two engines. http://www.desertaircraft.com/engine...hp?Page=DA-150
At this time I can't get to the innards of the cowl to measure the distance from the engine box to the front of the cowl, however, here is a photo give a comparison.
The distance along the top of the cowl to the front is 13 1/8". Something to take into account is that I modified the cowl, for scale reasons, to remove the protuberance/extension that is behind the spinner disk. This probably took a half inch off of the length of the cowl. The full scale SD does not have this extension.

Ken, I talked to Bud the other day and showed him your comment on World Radio Labs. He remembers Leo Meyerson well and did a fair amount of buying from World Radio for the hobby shop. Thanks for the memory, it's been a long, long time since I thought of WRL.
The replacement stab parts arrived from AMR and work is progressing. I'll have some pictures if I can remember how to upload them. lol

We had a great time at the IMAA Rally of Giants at Bomber Field. We went down on Wednesday and came back on Sunday. It rained hard late Wednesday afternoon and off and on on Thursday. Ross and I managed to get in 6 flights on the Super Decathlon.
Twice as Ross taxied out for flight #6 the engine died, we started it and it died again. I removed the cowl and we performed a test run. Could not duplicate the problem with the cowl off. I richened the low speed needle 1/8 turn. The transition was better from low to high speed. I re-installed the cowl and flight #6 went just fine. We believe that the oppressive heat and humidity was the cause.
Here are a four photos. I think I made 45. Brought back a nice piece of hardware. Jim, with his beautiful Tiger Moth, took 1st place.
We had a little over 100 pilots and probably 150 airplanes.

Nice pictures....i saw the 50% Spacewalker in High Flight magasine this month, very well done!
Our next step is to write to write the instruction manual for our 50% Spacewalker kit, one seat Space.
By the way it is raining or very windy here, all the time.

Ive finally finsihed the model - its taken around 18 months. It was signed off by the inspector last week and Im just waiting for the paperwork to be returned by the CAA and then were ready to fly. I still have yet to solve the transportation issue. Here are a few pics - the resolution is poor as it was my daughters camera and something is going funny with it.

RE: 42% Super Decathlon Build
Does anyone have a high resolution picture of the Decathlon instrument panel? We have Bob's documentation but cannot tell what the instruments are on the left side. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If it helps, I can send via PM a CDR file with the SD panel I use for my 30%Decathlons...
Here´s the photo...you can also take the picture and enlarge it to the proper size.

Guys
Bluebird is now ready for action...tomorrow, if the weather permits, I will assembly the plane outdoors to shoot some "official" pictures.
Meanwhile, here are a few of the finished fuse sitting on top of my workbench(es)...
Enjoy

Really a great looking airplane. Do you have any pictures showing the top of the fuse between the wings? A second question, how did you attach the fiberglass piece on the top of the front section of the fuselage?
Really nice looking! Should fly wonderfull.

Thanks David
Yours is a beauty too, would love to see flying shots of it - if you have a nice chap who can take it on film, the better - youtube is out there waiting for your footage.

this was the only real scale concession I made on my model. In order to ease up the building of the wing saddle I widened F4 at the top to create a perfect rectangular top view for the entire wing center area, i.e., there is no need to build an additional fairing on the rear root rib to match the wing´s root rib. Only a trained scale judge´s eye would notice that.
On the full scale Decathlon the taper of the fuselage begins right after the sunroof, and a metal fairing covers the gap on older models. This fairing is screwed on on older SDs, on newer SDs it´s integral with the wing root.
Here are the photos, just taken for you...obviously the camera flash distorts the color...
Thanks for the nice words about the plane. I was several times asked to enlarge the kit to 45% or so. Enlarging the wooden structure would be as easy as 1-2-3 on the computer, but the demand around here would be for 1-2 models per year which wouldn´t justify at all the added work and efforts such as new molds for fiberglass and windshield, etc...
See ya around

RE: 42% Super Decathlon Build
Here are the promised outdoor photos.
That´s humble me behind the plane...
Looking at the pix, I see I missed one detail: to make the door lining and map pocket. Will be done soon...
The flag is that of our country, in tribute to our football (or soccer as you americans call it) team who´s fighting for the 6th title in South Africa...
Enjoy

RE: 42% Super Decathlon Build
That is one fine looking plane Marcus. Looking forward to flight reports. We (Ross, Jim, and I) flew the 42% three times today. On my flight Jim also flew his 50% Spacewalker II. They were matched on speed and performance.
There are now 39 flights on the SD. The Mejzlik 32 x 10 prop on the DA-150 is so quite it's unreal. It performs as well as the noisy 32 x 10 Xoar.

Instrument panel just arrved, looks really nice. Fit to the fiberglass is excellent. Done by SAC Headquarters of the Midwest.
How do I attach a picture after downloading to RC Universe? Must be blind.
Thanks
