RE: Prop choice for Q-35
Bill, I've found that a 20-6/10 works best for me on my Stinson (23lbs). Does a great job. Have also used other sizes over the years(18-8, 18-6/10, 20-6). Bought my engine in back 1979; 'updated/overhauled' it in '99.
For your Nosen, I'd use a 20-6 or a 20 6/10. Good luck...

RE: Prop choice for Q-35
i just received a Q35 i bought off of ebay...... What spark plug is recommended? Ive never had a magneto ignition, i noticed the front of the engine has a spade tab on the magnete, is that where i connect a switch, and then ground it to the engine?
so theoretically if i were to put this engine on a test stand, and fed it some gas, it would turn on with out a switch installed, and i would have no way of turning it off correct, except for choking the carb?
im hoping to have some questions answered before a buddy of mine a Quadra expert takes a look at it this weekend

RE: Prop choice for Q-35
looking at the head on that engine,, it looks like it's a marine engine or been converted to one. With some cyl head fins machined off would cooling be a a concern?

RE: Prop choice for Q-35
Your Q35 might be a marine version as the head seems to have a provision for a water cooling attachment.
As for the type of spark plug, the 'original' Q35 instructions (late 1970s, early '80s) called for a RCJ8 or RCJ6. They later changed this and recommended the Champion RCJ-7Y, or equivalent. This is what I use use, with excellent results.
If your engine was being used in marine applications I can't suggest what plug might have been used or how it might now perform in an a/c environment with this plug. Prop size selection might also need more thought, too, depending on how it was runs.
The tab on the magneto coil is for your grounding switch wiring.

RE: Prop choice for Q-35
Just FYI don't forget, unless it has been converted to cd ignition, the old quadra Q35 has points and condenser behind the flywheel. If you look, you'll see a small wire leading to them.

RE: Prop choice for Q-35
I have a 35 and 40 that I'm working on right now, the engine in the photo has the same wire on the mag for the points as the two that I am working on. Points are set at .015", mag at .010" and plug at .025". Setting the points at .013" advances the timing and may improve performance. The 35 is spinning a Zinger 18x8 at 7250, the 40 spins the same prop at 7500.
The wire for the points is the one plugged onto the mag and is routed on the right side of the engine to points behind the flywheel.
My job was to move the electric starter from the 35 to the 40 without breaking it, of course that didn't work and had to make a few parts on the lathe.

RE: Prop choice for Q-35
thankyou, i decided that the 35 is too small for what i originally wanted it for, im going to end up getting an electronic ignition 50cc instead .... Its listed on RCU
