RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
I built a Balsa USA 1/3 Super Cub a few years ago. Very rewarding project. It was the never ending wood pile, however. After an evening of building, the next morning it would seem like someone put more wood in the box!

I sold it several years ago, but it had a Zenoah G45 on the nose. More than enough power, but I still had to add a pound of lead to balance the airframe.

RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
Working for two days and here are some pictures of the ailerons. First I had to cut the tails of the ribs off in the area of the aileron and notch the remaining rib for the 1/8 x 1/2 piece on top and 1/4 x 1/4 on the bottom. The cardboard template I made to mark the ribs so I could cut the curve on the tails. Then I glued in some 1/2" blocks to make the curved area shown in the detail. Using the right angle Dremel with a sanding drum I sanded then to the rough shape. I made a sanding tool out of a piece of 1" dowel and glued a piece of scrap 1/4 x 1" on it for a handle. With some spray 77 glue I stuck some sand paper on it. With the tool I did the finish sanding to the curve blocks.

Now that the wings were both cut and made ready for the ailerons I begun to build the ailrons. I built the first one pretty much just piece by piece making enough parts for both ailrons. After getting one done I used some clamps and clamped the 1/4 x 1/4 spruce spars to the under side of the completed right ailron to make a mirror copy for the left side. It worked very well. Oh yeah besides the rear tips that you cut for the ribs you have to make 16 more pieces so you have enough for the ends of the ailron and the double ones by the hinge locations.

I still have to cut soome spruce for the trailing edges the piece you can see in the above picture is the piece of 1/16" ply glued into a slot at the rear of the ribs. When I make the trailing edge pieces they also get a slot cut into them and glued onto the 1/16" ply to reinforce the joint. I post the pictures of the finished ailerons once I put that on.

Don:
I know you are a ways from covering but I have a list of covers (inspection plates and etc.) for the fuselage and wings that are from the full scale side. I am trying to get the guy that manufactures them to do a 1/3 scale set. We can get them for J-3 Cubs and PA-18.
It would be a shame to go this far on the Cub and not finish it with a few little scale details.
If you will PM me with your address I will send you the details.

RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
Greetings Don, having purchased the plans last month I'm very interested in your thread. Years ago I a member in my club had the Nelitz Cub with a 270 Saito and it flew quite well. . Mine will fly with a 300 version. Maybe you could help me on a few questions. Are you going to build up the hinges from the plans or modify some such as Rocket City? What glue and where did you get your main spar material from? The fuse metal work looks like it will be a bit of a challenge along with the gear. I'm looking for a source for the steel, maybe a automotive brake or fuel line. Your work is looking good...
thanks............Mike

Thanks Anthony, I've seen your builds and I gota tell you they are very nice!
I have a 100" waco plan I've been working on for the last year and I think it will be my next project. I've made it to fit a 100cc twin. I've made most of the plugs for the fiberglass parts so far and soon I will probably kit it.

I am building all the metal work at my shop. Landing gear and tubing cage in the fusalage, tig welded steel tubing. If you need some help with these parts or others let me know.
The main spar I just cut it out of aircraft spruce and plained it on my power plain at my shop. also the spruce trailing edges etc. I have used poplar, maple etc. on planes in the past and have never had any problems.

The hinges I may do them from 1/4" square or round tubing. I'm still looking at full scale details. Actually so far what I've seem the plan detail is very close to full scale. The glue I used on the main spar to ribs and the front leading edge of the wings is elmers ultimate glue. It foams up is very sticky and strong when bonding balsa to a harder wood like the spar. I don't try to clean it up until it's dry. I just trim it with an xacto knife if there is a big blob. Actually unless the foamy blobs are in the way I don't even clean them up. The gusets they form add to the strength and the weight isn't measurable.

I get materials at http://www.mcmaster.com they have the steel tubing in aircraft grade easy to weld. That is if you are a welder.

Hi Anthony
Its the YMF-3 6" 100CC, 6" Wheels, 100" wingspan, I made this size, 28 percent , to fit my 100cc engines , standard 6" wheels. I was going to do a 33 percent but they are already out there.

Wings require a lot of little detail that I am working on one by one. Not moving fast as a kit but very satisfiying builld. After all it is a hobby ! Here are the pics of the alierons almost completed, I did the trailing edges and sheeted the leading edges. Then pinned into place to do some sanding to shape the up a little better.

RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
I've been looking at some full scale Cubs to see the detail of the hinges and the plans are fairly close. But instead of using 1/4" x 1/4" spruce I made them out of brass. I used 1/4" square brass tube. I found that I needed to use 7/32" round tubing in the ends. and wrapped with a .016" brass strap. I silver soldered these all togeth. Then I cut a small piece of grey flex rod housing which fit tightly into the 7/32" brass tube. Then I inserted this assembly into the hinge that I made from .032" brass plate that I bent with a small metal brake I had. After drilling an 1/8" hole as on the plan, I found that it was loose on the 2/56 bolt. So I drilled it out to 5/32" and now cut a piece of the yellow inner rod that I had from a Sullivan Golden Rod long enough to go through both sides of the hinge. Then drilled it just slightly so the 2/56 bolt slide through it snuggly. This proccess took all day but the results were good. No metal on metal function of the hinge. And no wiggle. Well here are the pics.

Starting to fit the finished tubes into the wing. That's as far as I got this weekend. I still have to drill the other halves of the hinges. I only did one, five more to go. Stay tuned
