The hinges detail looks great. I have a few questions...as usual! How did you slit the trailing edge 1/16" if you used the design on the plans? The same same set-up is on the tail feathers on the dowels also. I was busy last weekend cutting wing ribs and the formers for the fuse. The Aircraft Spruce Supply order came in today with the fabric covering and spruce spars and such. The fabric is cheap, about 34 bucks or so for 10 yards and I think it's 60" wide. I have the BUSA order to receive yet, then I'll be in good shape.
take care...........Mike

I used a dremel with a fiber reinforced disk, the one that is about 1" dia . I marked a line on the spruce trailing edge, put on my saftey glasses and just ground a grove in it. I know it is kiinda crude , but it was really very easy. I have also done it on my table saw. To do it you take a sheet of plastic or styrene and with the blade all the down. Set my fence, put the sheet of plastic on the saw table and tape it down. Then turn up the blade until it cuts through the plastic and is just sticking up the height you want, about 5/16" now you have no gaps around the blade and can cut small and narrow pieces without them getting sucked down.
The Dremel was alot fasted.

RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
Well another weekend has rolled around and I finally got some time to work on the Cub. I started making the 3/8" dowel frame work for the sides. Also I ordered some 4130 steel tubing to make the cage and Landing gear. It takes a little time to cut all the angles and then sand a round notch in the end of each dowel so they fit together like welded tube, but its coming along. I had to splice the long pieces they are longer than the 4' long dowel tthat I had. Make splices about 8 diameters long and they were glued with 30 minute Epoxy.

Don,
Your build is looking great, I really like your hinges. I am really interested in seeing how your forward fuse comes together.
I had mised the post where you asked about the 33# ribs on the Waco, most are balsa and there are some light ply where the wings join.
I also have plans for a full scale Cub, I have the plans for making every bracket and fitting on the Cub. If there is anything you need just let me know and I will get the sheet scanned and e-mailed to you. I thought about building the Cub at 50% exact scale right down to the last fitiing.
Later!!

Don,
I will look thru the drawings and see what might interest you. I know I have the throttle assembly as well as the control stick assemblies. If there is anything specific you are looking for just let me know.

I was looking for a picture of the bottom of the cowl and the scale exhaust. I was also looking for the top & bottom of the wings and to show the controls of the alieron linkage. Interior and dash. Thanks in advance.

RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
Sunday working on the Cub after a long week at work. I made some copies of the "F" pieces and cut out the individual patterns and tac glued them onto 1/8" balsa. Except F9 & F10 they aare 1/8" ply. then cut them out with my jigsaw and sanded them a little them I used a 3/8" diameter sanding drum in my Dremel tool to cut the radius corners shown.

Next I made a copy of the F1 and F1a firewall pieces. Cut them out and tac them onto some 1/2' ply. The plan called for 3/8" ply but I was all out so I used 1/2". I am not concerned about the weight because these cubs always seem to need alot of nose weight to balance them. I drilled the 3/8" holes where the fuselage dowels go before I cut out the firewall. It's easier that way.

Next there is a small rectangle hole shown on the bottom center of each of the "F" pieces so I cut them in. Here are the "F" pieces displayed and a 1/4" x 3/8" stick. Although I can't see this stick shown on the plans....... still looking.

Don,
I have some nice pics of the Cub showing alot of details, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will have to send them over a series of e-mails as the folder I have the pics in is 118MB.
I will scan some of the drawings I have for you but it will be a week or so until I go back to work. We have large scanning and printing equipment at work that I have access to.

Don........it looks like you had another productive weekend on the Cub. These pics will sure help when I get to the stages that you've done. It will clear up some of the plans for me. I received the rest of the material for mine last week. I got the metal for the gear and interior Sat. I'm using 3/8" and 5/16" automotive brake/line for the gear and interior pieces. The wall thickness looks good. I'll start the fuse with these sections first...............take care...........Mike

RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
I spent most of the weekend building the other half of the fuselage. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. I have to still build the steel gear. I still haven't decided which engine I want to put in it,..... I have decide soon so I can set the firewall in the right place. I'm thinking at least a G62 but maybe a twin 80 or 100. I sure don't want to be underpowered.

The G-62 would be a good choice, the plans show a Quadra 42. The plane will be a floater so I don't think you will have to worry about the G-62 pulling it around. You may have to worry about ripping the wings off with a 100 twin though.

The plans I was talking about is for a full scale J-3, There are way too many pages to scan and send by e-mail. If there is a specific item some one wants to replicate on the Cub I can scan that sheet. You can buy a set of full scale plans from Wag-Aero. I purchased my plans about 6 years ago.
