I saw a Big Hots in a mag quite a few years ago that had wing tip smoke. They routed a large tube through the fuselage from the muffler to the wing and then teed off to each wing tip. The connection to the wing was able to be disconnected to remove the wing. A servo either restricted or allowed the exhuast to be routed to the wing. It seemed to work pretty good, when flying most of the smoke would come out of the wing tip even though the normal exhaust wasn't restricted. The tubes going through the fuse and wing were wrapped in Nomex to shield the heat from the wing. If i were to do it it might be like that.

there are some pyrotechnics that you can use, but once you "turn them on" they run till burned out. They can make a LOT of smoke, and come in various colors. The tube thru the wing can also work OK if you are careful about materials and heat containment.
