Hi - end of the tank is balsa, the firewall is aluminum.
Hope to have some pix of the engine in the next few weeks. Then the Cub is virtually all done. Roll on Spring.

Mike,
How did you handle the covering on the edge of the side back "C" window of the fuselage. That area is edged with 1/16th ply. but I wasn't sure if your were able to tuck the coverage into the area created for the window pane.
As usual, I appreciate your thoughts.
Gordon

Hi Gordon, yes I left a small edge of covering - perhaps less than 1/8" - which I did tuck into the groove. I use Stitts Lite which is pretty thin, and doped it to the edge of the ply, then ran a heat shrink iron (round side of the shoe) around the opening to get the covering started around the edge. I then put a series of slits around the remaining free edge to allow it to basically double back on itself into the slot. Sounds way more of a fiddle than it actually is!
Hope that helps.

Ok, so the fuselage is finally done!
Just some of the underwing pulleys, tiedowns & pitot to do, and then it's on to final re-checking of the incidences & cg.
Here are some pix of it to date - can't wait to get it out there - it's been quite a long process!
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks all - it's been a great project so far - it's Cub #5 for me (varying sizes both J3 & Super Cub) and I was determined to make it my ultimate.
I'll post some more pix when the rest is done (shouldn't be too long), I'm looking forward to having it's wings on - it's been a while.
Attached are a few of the dummy Continental under construction if anyone is interested.
Lot of work - laser cut ply/balsa, aluminum, resin cast pipes & valve covers, and a lot of stuff from the junk box of bits - and a good reason to save time & build a Super Cub!
Cheers,
Mike

Mr Bill......Greetings!.......how's the Cub coming along? Hope you have some flying on it. I have finally finished up the metal work and hinges etc and am starting the fuse sides now that the tailfeathers are done. Is the cabin interior 1/8" plywood sectioned in triangular shapes between the x braces, or a one piece "slab" forward to the firewall? Thanks for your time!............................Mike

Mike - Cub's done, just actually have to do final cg checking, but I've just had shoulder surgery and really can't manhandle this puppy for a few months, so it's got to wait. Oh, well....
The sides in the front are slab balsa on the ply sheeting from the edge of the metal covering forward. The 'dowel structure' that's on the ply is trimmed to that edge - I've attached pics of mine while it was still naked in that area in case that helps.

Mr Bill................I wish you a speedy recovery on the shoulder. I wasn't clear earlier. The interior ply around the door opening and opposite side, is it sectioned in or a single piece?...............thank you!.................Mike

Single piece -it's where the strength comes from as the dowels really don't do anything there. However you have to flatten the rear of the dowels that overlay the ply by the thicknesses of the ply before you laminate them to the ply - so that there is no difference between the surface level of the structural dowels further back and the "dummy" ones on the ply.
Hope that makes sense!

Russ, I ran them through my mini table saw & then finished them on the sanding machine. There are not that many that need treating this way.
But I did do the top horizontal one a little differently to what the plans call for.
I did post about it earlier, but essentially Bob called for the top of the ply to stop a little short, and be chamfered to fit to the dowel, but I made my ply full depth, and epoxied on the same reduced thickness dowels that are used elsewhere on the ply.
I then rounded the inside top edge of the ply to match the roundness of the dowel so it still appears to be a tube when covered. It;s a much stronger arrangement.

Hi again Larry - great to see the L4, sorry I missed it! I'm still planning to get up to see you in the not too distant future. Just got to get this shoulder thing out the way!
I'll give you a call.
Take care.

Beautiful work! I'm doing a 1/3rd scale Supercub right now and I am very interested in the seatbelt material that you used. Where did you find it?
