Another TF P51 engine thread

I've got a Top Flight giant p51 and am having trouble deciding on an engine. I have both a zdz 40 and a zdz 60 on my workbench. I've fiberglassed the airframe and painted and have sierra retracts with aerotech gear doors. . I am planning on a full pilot figure and have a leo spychalla cowl, which is amazing, but weighs more than the stock cowl. I'm guessing I'll be on the heavy side so my perfect fitting zdz 40 doesn't seem like my best option. Does anyone have any info on fitting the zdz 60 without hacking up leo's artwork? I've heard jtec makes an incowl muffler but you have to custom order it. I have read about a few people using the 60s so I'd love to see some photos. Or am I just going to have to order a dle 55?

A friend in our club has the P-51 and he uses a G-62, I can tell you it is not hurting for power AT ALL So this could give you something to go by.

No doubt the G-62 has plenty of power, but with side mounted Exhaust and Carb, how much cowl cutting was needed to fit that G-62? Another option would be a Revo 52

If I remember there is not much sticking out at all. I'll email him and see if I can get him to send me a picture.

Well lots of guys use the Zenoah but I HATE the carb setup even if you track down one of those curved mounts.

The ZDZ-40 probably won't have enough power. The ZDZ-60 should fit inside the cowl but you WILL need either the J-Tec compact Pitts muffler which is made specifically for this model and the AeroWorks P-51 or you could go with the Keleo scale functional exhaust which does require cutting the sides of the cowl. My brother has one of these models with the ZDZ-80 and the Keleo exhaust. The ZDZ-80 is almost exactly the same dimensions as the ZDZ-60, it's only .010 longer and it's exactly the same height, width and mounting pattern as the ZDZ-60. It weighes a hair more with the 60 being 4.0lbs. while the 80 is 4.2lbs. The G-62 if modified and lightened will weigh in about 4.0.lbs as well. The ZDZ-40 and the DLE-55 will both come in about 3.0lbs (these are all bare engine weights, no module or exhaust) so if yours is tailheavy at all, which engine might be determined by weight.

I guess you could call it a "custom order" but J-Tec builds all their stuff on order so it's not anything out of the ordinary, doesn't take 'em long either. I have one of their compact Pitts type mufflers on the DA-60 in my AW P-51 and it fits great.

The DLE-55 (and the Zenoah) should have fewer issues with cooling as it has more fin area than the ZDZ engines which you have to pay attention to the airflow. Great engines and the throttle response cannot be duplicated by the reed block type engines, but they will get warm if you don't pay attention to what you're doing with the cowling/baffling.

There are a couple of HUGE threads on this model, please take a look at them paying particular attention to the mods for beefing up the wing spar in the landing gear area or they have a nasty tendency to shove the gear through the top of the wing on a hard landing, or even some wing failures have been noted. My brother did the wing mods, said it was really easy following the instructions here on RCU and told me the other night he's really glad he did it as he's had a few crummy landings even knocking the gear clear out of the thing with no real damage to the wing. Just a thought.... ;)

Zeeb; Any chances of posting some photos of that DA60 with the J-Tec Pitts mounted in your Mustang; I'm currently building the TF GS RTC P-51 and am exploring engines choices as well, don't want to hack the Cowl too much, originally was going with the Revo50 Engine that features rear Carb and Exhaust, which will only require opening the bottom of the cowl, but I am a little concerned about potential cooling problems.

Thanks, Doug.

You could use a Moki 210 nitro. Sufficient power and it fits pretty well. Just an option. Nearly all the larger gas engines are a problem hiding them inside.

I have a DLE55 and one for a G62.

Both are great!

I've posted some engine pics in the AW forum's P-51 thread, but I've got to get some newer pics as the ones I have were taken without the muffler installed and sent to AW so they could see the nifty Blazing Star mount. DA doesn't want the 60's mounted on standoffs so they send out some wood spacers. I didn't like that idea for several reasons including the fact that the plywood spacers would compress over time and there wasn't enough room inside to get my linkages connected with ball links.

I'll see if I can get some pics posted here with the muffler installed in the next day or two... ;)

Thanks a bunch for the posting the photos; no worse cowl cutting than a DA50 or DLE55, I wonder if the AW P-51 Cowl is larger/wider than the the TF P-51.

Can't say for sure other than the JTec muffler was designed expressly for these two models. IIRC the guys on the Warbird forum complain that the topline on the TopFlite cowl is out of whack with scale but other than that I don't remember anything else.

Why don't you ask the cowl question in the Warbird forum?

Hi Greecer3,
I can highly recommend the REVO 52. It is hands down the best fitting engine for the Top Flite P-51. I have numerous pictures and posts on other threads here. Here are the links. I also have a few links to youtube. You will see that it flys great and does not lack power.

Speaking of engine mounts [X(] I just found a Byron engine mount I forgot I had, what are they worth cause I don't think I'll ever use it.

It's an outfit called Blazing Star Products and it's so small (one guy) he only has a Facebook page for a website.... lol

You can do a google search and find references to the mounts and more contact information if you want it. IIRC the mount was $60.00 plus shipping.

I'm not sure if that question was directed to me but the isolation mount ( Great Planes) came from Tower Hobby, I built up the rest of it with 1/4" aircraft ply and used the stand offs that came with the DLE 55 if that helps.
