SIG Rascal 40 Glow to Electric
I have a Rascal 40 with a Magnum .52 4-stroke engine that flys great at 5 lbs. 2 oz. I want to convert it to electric using a brushless motor with LiPoly batteries. Information on this is somewhat sparse. I was considering a Hacker motor but if there are other good products out there I'd like to know about them.
What I really need is a list of things I need to do this. Motor, controller, batteries etc. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Don

Thanks for the address Wiz, lots of good information to start my thinking going. Just what I was looking forward too. Any of the setups using the Litium Poly cells? Thanks Don

RE: SIG Rascal 40 Glow to Electric
The Rascal has been converted extensively. head over to the ezone for info. Do a search in the 'sport' section and youll find lots of info. I flew mine on the bare-minimum setup, with an AXI 2820/10 and 10 cell cp2400 pack. It came in to 5lbs 10 ounces, and flew pretty well, although i would have liked more power. For easy floating-around performance it was great. Using lithiums you could save 10 ounces, and my spinner weighed 3 ounces, and i used full-size servos. Going light as possible, it could come in at 4 and a half pounds, that would fly extremely well. I crashed it and am rebuilding it off-and-on, and have already shaved off 3 ounces or so from the airframe. The guys at the glow field were very impressed, called it the 'Hoover' because it was so quiet cutting through the air.
Next project im thinking about is the Rascal 110. It has been converted a few times. I would use an AXI 4130 series motor and a big bank of batteries.

I've been eyeing the Rascal 110 also. Motocalc seems to think that a Mega 22/30/3 geared would be a good setup also. RCM has a review of the kit if your interested.

wow, a 22/30/3 culd pull the 110? That setup would definitely come in LIGHT on the wings and wallet. I would have thought a deeply geared 22/45 serieswould be a better match, this is sure a big plane. the one conversion i know of used a HUGE maxcim motor that barely fit in the cowle and a bunch of batteries, i think it could be done much lighter and cheaper. Ill take a look at the review, i need to find an empty weight for the plane frame only. I need to get motocalc too.

Thanks cafplanekid , your plane looks real nice, hope it returns like that after you get it repaired. I'll take a look at ezone too. The suggestions about gearing are good things to look into also. More usable power with the same motor and less amps drawn. Don

[]I have done a conversion on the Sig Rascal 40 back in 2002. Look in mikev photo albium and its there. Also did one on Sportsman 60 size Spitfire and Model Tech Excite 90. All the specs are there with the photos. Just did a new conversion on the Excite 90 to a Hacker C50-10L 6.7.1 geared with a 18 X 10 EProp and 5s4p Lipo Battery Pack. Waiting to fly it tomorrow. Flew ok with the other system but will be twice as good now.
Happy Flying. Mikev

RE: SIG Rascal 40 Glow to Electric
I saw two of these conversions (Rascal110) at the Mid America Electric Fly-in last summer. Both were powered by Maxcim motors and Model electronics gearboxes. Both were Majestic flyers. Made me want to get one.
I think the Mega 2230-3 motor would be a little sparse even geared. You might go for the 2245-2 with a gearbox. You're going to need a few batts for that bird.
TheRascal 40 should fly just fine with the Mega 2230-3 w/ gearbox or beltdrive(quieter).
I am converting a Great Planes 40 size Cub using this combo. Ecal says it should fly nicely with 16 cells and aN APC14X12 E prop.
Good luck with your Rascal! jollyroger
