Hey Stephen. Good choice in elec. conversion ! My ModelTech Extra is probably one of the most stable and agile planes I've ever flown. Droped an Axi 28/26/10 ,Castle creations 45 A. speed cont. and two , three cell 2000 mAh Kokam lipo. packs in parallel & the thing smokes. You're right about landing speed.Pretty fast.Try Flaperons. Theres a pic of it on my profile page. It's the one on the bottom of the three planes. The others belong to my buds Curt and Jaime. Best of flights !

I have one of these on the way to me. What I want to know is how did/does it fly with a glow motor? This plane is going to replace my Tequila Sunrise 25. The problem with the Tequila is very high wing loading. How does the Edge fly? I just gotta know.
Thanks

My friend had one with a .25 OS. Unlimited verticle and slower landing because wing loading is less w/o a big battery. Hard to start with an inverted engine.

Stephen ,I am using an apc 10/6 prop with 2000mAh,15c,3s,2p batteries. It also flys well with a 3200mAh,3s,15c pack.Amp draw is around 38 A.
Best of flights !

Guys
Just got a Polyquest 4S 4000 MAh lipo pack. It is 6 oz. lighter than my Kokam pack which will go in my Funtana 90 project. I'll report back on Mon or tues.

Hey Stephan. Yea... lets hear how those new lipos work-out for you.I've just put an AXI 28/26/10 in the modeltech Extra with an 11/8 prop and am drawing 42A on a 3s2p 4000mAh 15C pack.At around $85 a piece thats $170 a set.Looking for other makers with high amp draws and mAh's. Definately keeping that motor though ! OUTSTANDING vertical performance ! Best of flights to ya !

GUYS!
Here it goes! The new polyquest 4S 4000 mah battery was tested this AM/0730 in the Modeltech .25size Extra 300 using a Jeti 30-3 BL motor with a DD 11x5.5 prop. This is the same motor and prop used with the Kokam 4S 4000 mah pack. The PQ battery weighs 6oz less and yielded close numbers. 400+ watts at 36 Amps. The real difference was the reduction in weight. The Extra was able to achieve unlimted verticle at half throttle even after 2/3 of the pack was gone. With the Kokam the added weight requires a higher throttle setting. Loops, rolls, inverted flight and the landing were able to be done at a slower air speed. A 10 minute of flight with power to taxi back was accomplished.
Hobby Lobby has a good one here!

Guys,
Motor swap!!! I took the Jeti out of the Extra 300 and put it in my New Magic. I took the Brushed Endoplasma car motor I once had in my now dead Avistar and put it in the Extra. It flies lighter and slower than the brushless versions I tried before. I used a 3S 3200 kokam and was able to fly 7 minutes plus taxi back to the pitts. It pulls 30+ amps. 280 watts. The preformance is limited but okay for loops and rolls. Landings are easier and takeoffs are longer and flatter.
The best thing is I didn't spend any money!!!!

Whats that saying? If it aint broke, brake it... Well, I too have had a Modeltech Extra conversion for some time now, and it flies great. So, now that it is trimmed, balanced, and flying beautifully, the only next logical step is...change it.
I love the performance of the plane, but I couldnt help but think, "Why are those ailerons so tiny?" And thus it began...
View the following pictures at your own risk, as I have no idea what the end results will be...but it might not be pretty...

I bought my 300 Extra back in 2002 and it has sat around for four years waiting to get in the air. Could some one post some detail pictrures of the motor mount and the battery placement for me?
I have a spare 30-3 and 15-3 setting around. so the 30-3 with TP2100 3s1p sounds like my best combo?

StephenT, it seems that the extra would be too heavy with the 4s 4000 pack... did that not add too much weight to the plane? What was the total weight of the pack? What about the all up weight of the plane?

I see this plane shares a aileron servo. Can it be built with 2 easily?

Are you guys still flying the Extra? I haven't flown mine in about 3 years so its about time I get it out of the hanger again. It either has an OS 40 or 46 I cant recall right now but it sure was fast and landings were always hot.
