Default jet to electric conversion?

Looking at some of the larger electric ducted fans on the net I have been wondering if it would be possible to convert say a Skymaster F-15 from jet to electric power. Does anyone know if this can/has been done? and if you could even make a saving by using electric power on a jet model? If it is possible you could say goodbye to throttle lag forever and have still quite a bit of thrust, possibly even more power to weight than a real jet.

I don't see why not, just check the motor/prop/battery pack specs as to how much thrust combined they can produce. I think it's also a much safer way of flying these. I have seen some rather disturbing crash video of jets, they resembled more of a military weapon blowing up on impact rather then an rc plane.

What's you're current flying weight? From that you can subtract a couple of lbs and that should be a good estimate of what it will be electrified. For edf you want to shoot for 200watts per lb. The hardest part will be making intake ducts which are neccessary for edf, unlike turbine.
One of the guys here converted the smaller Skymaster F-16 but unfortunately that went in but not because of lack of power.

Trundle - most thrust from EDF at present is about 14 lbs, how big is the Skymaster? EDF is not cheap when you start playing at the 120mm sized level with 10S lipoly. Not only is there almost no throttle lag but also almost no residual thrust too. As for power to weight ratio I think turbines are much better!

Try BVM Jets to see what they have. You can also check out TAM Jets ... if you want smaller but not toy sized EDF that looks nice ... go to www.x-flight.hk

Airpower units are also reasonably priced. FOr 120mm units its below USD800 for fan/motor/esc
