Lil Toni E-Conversion

Hey guys, I was just wondering about Greg Covey's conversion of the Lil Toni? He says on one of his Amp'd articles that he uses the Actro 32-3 and gets amazing speed out of this. Is this the heli version? I cant seem to find that motor anywhere. If not anyone know a good replacement that would yield similar results. I believe the 32-3 gets around 555Kv. Anyway any info at all would be greatly appreciated. Anyone else on here convert this plane?
Many thanks
Ray

Ray ... how fast do you want to go? How much are you willing to spend? I got the Kyosho Kelly Racer but due the weak nose ring I am only keeping mine to 5S and sport flying. Some have taken the Kelly to 10S and 130+ mph. They are spending tons of money but the speed is awesome. We can go cheap for sport flying or insane speeds. Let us know so we can assist you.

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

basically I would like to go as fast as his....in one of the videos he goes nearly 200.

I have been flying Greg's little Toni for the past few years the motor is an Actro (I am not sure of the size and wind) and if I remember correctly the motor is fairly hard to come by, Hobby-Lobby used to carry them but no longer does. I do know that it runs on a 6400mah 6s pack and was clocked at 196mph on one of our flights.

edit: I checked and it is the 32-3 motor and it draws about 80 amps at WOT

Here is a link to one I have found through Google.

Very cool....so how would one go about putting a prop on that one? It looks like the one on the lil tony is reversed and as some sort of prop adapter on it.

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

awesome....so that 32-3 is a solid performing motor then? What kinda flight times are you getting? around 6-8mins? Is there anything else that you guys came across that would be a potential stumbling block? I am really excited about this one....almost 200mph is fast especially for and electric. I have a shoestring with an AXI that turns around 110mph and thats excting. What kinda prop are you guys using? APC E-prop? What diameter and pitch?

Devin McGrath 08-31-2009 09:26 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

The motor is outstanding, very high quality but expensive. The prop is an APC e prop but I will have to get the dimensions for you. We generaly fly it for about 5 min and there is usually more than 40% left in the pack. We have not flown it in about a year and I know I am itching to get it back out again. The airplane does some very impressive pylon turns and is a blast to fly. its the negative pylon turns that scare everyone! lol..... definitely my favorite speed rush airplane fallowed by my 160+ mph Projeti.

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

A Lil Toni on 6S that almost touches 200 mph? Man you guys are nuts!!! I am sure its tons of fun though ...

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

Good to hear about the 32-3......I took a look at it on that website you recommened. I guess for the performance $300 isnt to bad especially if it holds up. 5min on 60% of the pack isnt bad either. For me I imagine I will not be WOT the whole time....then and again....who knows....if you could get back to me with the prop that would be awesome....so have you guys been able to break the 200mph mark? What if you ran 7S instead of the 6S?

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

we have had allot of fun with the lil tony but we really have not tried to push the system much. every component comes dowm just warm to the touch nothing extreme and we have been happy with the performance. we have only checked the speed on it that one time so i am sure it has broken 200 at some point in its life. i should be able to get you the prop sizes shortly.

Devin McGrath 09-01-2009 03:24 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

The prop size is a 14x7e

Additional information can be found [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=1056]here[/link] in Greg Coveys Amped column as well as a video!

Dang ... she is fast! Time to check with the bank manager as to how much loan I can get ... the Actro looks like real hot stuff!

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

Devin, you guys are using a flightTech 80A but that is only rated at 6 cells....are there any other good speed controls that can handle a few more cells? The 32-3 can handle more power but in your opinion would adding a 7th cell actually make much of a difference other than weighing down the plane? How do you like the flightTech? I have used primarily Jeti.

Devin McGrath 09-02-2009 10:00 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

This is the only plane I have ever flown with a Flight Tech speed control. We have had good luck with it but in the past I have had great success with both Jeti and Castle Creations products. I don't think that the plane would mind the weight of another cell or two but the other option is upping the pitch of the prop.

I am considering building my own Actro powered plane possibly for next outdoor flying season maybe a Hanger 9 Sundowner

aerobat95 09-02-2009 11:42 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

The Sundowner is a sweet airplane....were you looking at the big or small one?

Devin McGrath 09-03-2009 02:29 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

Have not decided yet it looks like this motor may be a hot little set up in the sundowner 50 I would bet even faster than the lil Tony I just hope its not to much weight for it. I may look into some of the other Actro motors for it.

aerobat95 09-03-2009 06:47 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

I am sure if you put the 32-3 in the Sundowner 50 with 6 cells it would haul. I was looking at the instruction manual and it isnt clear if a 6S pack would fit....I also looked at the weights....the Lil Toni at 8.25# (max weight) gives a wing loading of 24.5oz/ft^2, and then for the Sundowner at its max weight of 7#, gives a wing loading of 28.2 oz/ft^2. Not sure how that would affect the slow speed characteristics. Do you know what your lil tony RTF weight is with a 6S? The wing area on the tony is 775 vs the 572 on the sundowner. Thats pretty significant considering wing area is a large contributor to drag...speed being the biggest. I wonder how similar in design the two wings are. But assuming you could fit a 6S pack and the weight was right around 7 pounds, the Sundowner would have less drag and should be a faster plane. I wonder if the tony is that much heavier due to the glass fuse? Cause the overall dimensions are pretty close...same size wing...the Toni OAL is 9 in longer...

Devin McGrath 09-03-2009 07:15 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

Not sure about the AUW of the lil Tony I know that the pack would fit in the sundowner no problem I would most likely just use a 6s 5000mah Thunder Power Pro Power 30c pack. The Tony has a 6400mah pack which is substantially heavier. Also the motor only weighs a few ounce more than the stock (Eflite Power 46).

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

hmmmmm....tough choice....I am not sure which I want to do now....I like both.....this is going to be a hard one to choose between. Do you know if the Sundowner has a access hatch to get to the batteries? That might be my deciding factor.

Devin McGrath 09-04-2009 01:34 PM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

the canopy is removeable with easy acces to the location where the batteries would go

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

thats pretty awesome....have you hear any goods or bads with the Great Planes Revolver GP/EP? I think I saw somewhere on here that it to makes a great speed plane. I am undecided as of right now....I want something that I could push to the 200MPH mark.

tIANci 09-06-2009 02:35 AM

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

If you want to go 200 why not get a better plane? The main hurdle for speed is the fuse. Planes like the Revolver can be pushed to 200 mph but at what cost? I am sure with a better fuse you can go as fast but for less.

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

So what do you reccommend as far as aircraft?

RE: Lil Toni E-Conversion

Try this link: [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1085012]Fast Planes[/link] They are mainly glow but some may be worth looking into for EP. Question is battery placement and CG. I love this video: [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjR-KrlVlVE&feature=related]Fast Plane[/link]

Then you have the F5D class of planes ... boy are they fast: [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXXJe19Z0rI]F5D video[/link]
