Just test flew my OMP Edge 540 (Kinda), and have some questions about weird engine stuff, etc. First of all, this engine is under two years old, and has not had a ton of run time. Yes, it's hours are up there, but I have not been using it for the last year or so. I ran it out of fuel the last time I used it also. Anyways, I had this thing running great on the ground. I ran two 6 ounce tanks through it just taxiing the beast, and it will idle for a while, and has good throttle response. After tuning it in, I went out for a test flight. I throttle up, I get about 50 feet and am about to ease the stick back, and the engine quits. Hmm, no biggie, I do the walk of shame, start her up again, and it does the same thing again, about 50 feet and it quits. I try it again, but this time I am realy easy on the throttle. It gets up about 20-30 feet, the engine dies, I have no airspeed, and it does kind of an elevator landing, plops on the gear, and no damage. By now, it is getting dark, and there have been too many bad omens not to fly the thing. Now, what in the heck is going on with my engine? Do I have it set too lean? Could there be water in the fuel or something? HELP!!! Thanks,
Dan

Next time when you start your engine give it full throttle while holding the plane, pick the nose up and point it up. If the engine dies or slows down then you are too lean.

Thanks a ton guys, I'll try that stuff later. I'm not sure that it is leanness, as there is a good smoke trail, but you never know. Electrics are so much simpler *sigh* Thanks again,

Hey Dan,
I'd say lean too. The only other time I've seen this type of thing was when someones fuel tank was moving. On the ground, it was fine. As soon as he took off, the tank slid and closed off the pressure line.
Good luck!

Hehe, fancy meeting you here Mike! Wow, you outrank me a bit in posts over here! Thanks for the help. BTW Would switching to the Byron synthetic fuels help with reliability/ performance? I have heard great things about it, but I tend to not screw with stuff if it is running OK.

Yeah, I spend most of my time over here. My posts here are getting up there, eh? One of these days I'll get some work done..... nah!
Let me tell you about fuel. I'm sure everyone has their favorite, but I had been using Powermaster in the 46FX that I have on my Magic. It was 15%. I used it for about a year when someone at the club told me to use Performance Plus. There was a story about brother's splitting up and infighting, etc. I went out a bought a case and about 2 months later, my motor went bad.
I seriously doubt it was the fuel, but just be aware that everyone has their favorite as well as the guys who custom blend their own. I don't think you can go wrong with any name brand fuel. And in the 46FX, I can honestly say I did not see any difference in the performance from 15% PM to 10% P+.
By the way, after recently buying a YS 63, I learned YS recommends PowerMaster for their motors.
Take it easy!

Could be lean cause the tank clunk is stuck or came off. Clunk could be rattling around in tank. If you think the engine should be set about right and you can't get it rich enough to continue running while keeping it in the powerband its probably a fuel delivery problem causing your "lean" run.
