Default is the engine dead, how to tell?

ok i have a 40LA and it has been in the air about 20 flights...
what is happening now is when i fly it flys for abot 4-5 minutes then starts making a vroom, vroom, vroom noise then it will dead stick ... when i feel the engine its pretty hot... i have the needle valve set at 3 turns out.... why is it getting so hot? any ideas? would a bad needle valve cause this?

I think i may know. Take the engine out and tighten everything down. You may have a leak somewhere and air is getting in. Check EVERYTHING for leaks before it is bolted on. the lean condition is because the engine is intermittantly sucking in air that would change the air/fuel mixture

im trying it... i think the needle valve assembly might be the culprit... i notices a couple little bubbles going from the needle valve to the carb..

Then there is your leak, take everything in the carb out for inspection, then put it back together. this should fix the problem.

Default Air leak is the culprit...

...and smartman300 has guided you well. Be sure and check the backplate for tightness as they are notorious for coming loose on the LA engines...

Poke it with a stick a few times.
If it doesn't move or make any gutteral noises, chances are, it's dead.

I have the exact same problem with my 40 LA. I have the needle mounted on the firewall with screws for lack of space elsewhere. It seems right on the ground but it leans out and dies in the air, piping hot!

Good Idea to check for leaks I'll try that. If anyone from OS is listening, would you please drop the remote needle valves...I never asked for them!

Well imagine that...MORE non-supporters of the Remote NV assy.

This is the result of a overly-cautious manufacturing community deathly afraid of being sued by some moron who can't keep his hands out of the prop.

There is no good reason other than "manufacturer liability" to explain this mess.

Perhaps when people start pulling their head out of their *****...we can get back to having good engines. Or just buy engines (MVVS, Enya, etc) that don't have these BLASTED remote needles)

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Amen. I hate remote needles. It's just another place for an air leak.

One more thought while I'm completely off the topic....

Warrnaty cards for hobby equipment ought to be re-written as
"forms of indemnity" holding the manufacturer harmless in the case of injury.

Want the warranty? Sign off. If you're an idiot? YOU pay the doctor bill.

I'm serious. We all know how people get hurt, and 99.99% of the time it's from carelessness. Lawyers have no business in the hobby unless they pay club dues....

And thus spaketh the 'Race

ok guys... i took the engine off checked it over took it apart.. everything looks ok.. i put the needle valve in water and checked for leaks NO Leaks... what i did find is... when looking at the front side of the plane the the right side that hooks to the firewall the glue joint was broken and possibly what might have been happening is the viberation at high speed was causing the fuel tank to get alot of bubbles in it.... i will try it again today and let you guys know....

After a few lean runs on an OS, it would be a great idea to pull the head and look for signs of the nickel plating peeling off of the liner.

Daggonit, nobody around here appreciates my warped sense of humor either.

Glad you were successful.
