I have flown the K&B .65 Sportster swinging an 11x7 on a Sig Senior Kadet that belonged to a friend and it handled that seven pound model with ease. I also flew the same engine/model combo while swinging both a 13x6 and a 14x6 props. The latter two props were good also and they flew the model in markedly different fashion than the 11x7.
The original muffler for the Sportster series of engines were ''tuned'' a bit and optimized to produce a bit of a power boost while quieting the exhaust note. I forget now if they were tuned to out perform K&B's .61 muffler, or if they were providing a bit more power than open exhaust. It's been too many years to be sure for this old brain.

Stump pulling is what I have in mind for mine. I have 936 sq. in. of scratch built biplane that I hope the .65 sportster will pull around. I don't need speed, but I hope it will fly a plane at around 7 lbs. Other than the 12x6, what does everyone prop the engine with?

Well I got the $26 Sportster 45 in the mail today.
I'll call this one Sandy because it's full of sand. Grrrrr
On the up side there is no burnt on castor oil. Ofcorse this means fuel with no castor oil was used in it. Grrrrr
I'll have to take it apart and clean it. I'm thinking a 95% chance of scored piston on this engine.
Can't wait to get it on the test stand and see how close to .9 HP I can get. I'm thinking 11,500 RPM with a 10x6.
May have to stick with NIB engines in the future.

Opps almost forgot.
Don't you guys just love when a fellow modeler breaks out
the hand drill and a gouges out some big ol' holes so the bolts
that happened to be laying around can be used. Rather than
driving down to the hardware store and picking up some bolts
that perfectly fit the bolt holes in the motor's mounting beams.

It could be worse. Fortunately, if they didn't run the engine with the sand in it, it will be a lot easier to get out as you don't have ball bearings to clean out too.
If a muffler doesn't fit, make it fit.
Creative head gasket replacement, several layers of aluminum foil, and the engine didn't even need it.

Yeah I used to really hate having a engine/plane dive into a sand pile or anything like that. It was nearly impossible to get the sand out of the ball bearings. It was much easier to install new bearings, as I always had to pull the bearings out to clean them out good anyway.

Broke in a NIB .65 yesterday. I primed the engine and went to flip it a few times with the chicken stick but the engine started up on the first flip the first time it was ever ran. This was a joy after the bulky Super Tigre G-51 that I was breaking in last weekend.
The .65 ran well with a 11x6 wood two blade. I then moved to a MAS 11x7 3-blade and it did great. The 12x8 3-blade bogged down the engine.

Ooh, Yeah I bought a K&B 28 off Ebay that turned out to have 4 different types of screws, including a tapered head wood screw in the head. I was really mad till I looked at the single photo in the add. Everything was in the photo, I was in a hurry to get a good deal. The seller was going to take it back, but I decided to send it back to MECOA for a tradein. It had so many issues that it needed to be melted down instead of repaired . I think I had $ 15 in it with shipping. So now I have a NIB 28.

The boot got soft and broke. The test stand has proved to be to harsh an environment
for the little on board glow systems so I'm going to make up a simple Du-Bro clip and AA
battery pack set up.

My 65 likes a hot plug and very little nitro. It handles 10% okay but 15% was too much. The 65 has high compression and a very short blowdown period so it should't take much nitro to get it to run well. They just need lots of time to break in. Lots of self machining going on in one of these.

Got in another .45 in the mail yesterday.
This one has a really large head on it. It has
deep cooling fins and a silver metal draw clamp
on the carburetor. The prop washer is black steel also.

Just curious...the .20 works so well with oversize props, do you know if the .28 will tolerate oversize props too? My .20 ran beautifully on a 12x4. Certainly not for maximum power, but useful for some scale types, or old timers.
It looks like you got a big drop in power when you went to the Graupner 9x7, so maybe not.

That 9x7 Graupner sounded great.
I just knew from the sound and propwash that it was putting out some real power.
When I ran the numbers it turned out not to be doing much at all.

Not a good deal with the price at $68, it wasn;t $47 like you stated. I would rather buy a new one or nearly new one as they sell for only a little more than that price.
But even at $47 it wasn't really a good deal, it could be all ragged out on the inside from lean runs, etc.
