Default Blowing glow plugs!

Hi all,

I'm consistantly blowing out glow plugs in my OS FX .61 engine and I can't figure out why. I'm using all types; OSF's, A8's, I can't figure it out. I'll get several flights in a row and when I go to the next flight, could be after a week the plane sat or the very next flight after the engine cools. It never did that when I was breaking it in. What is causing this to happen?

Hi!
You are running your engine too lean...or run to high nitro content in your fuel...or both! Do not use more than 15% nitro
5% nitro is perfectly enough for most engines.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm running Wildcat 10% 18% synthetic oil for both of my 2 and 4 stroke engines. My magnum 4-stroke loves it, I guess I see why! I see now that I have the engine broke in, it might be a little too lean as well. I'll make sure I run that rich on that high of an octane or invest in 2 grades. Thanks for the replies!

your 2-stroke abn or abc engines will thank you if you add a little castor to the fuel

Where do I purchase the castor oil and how much do I add to a gal of fuel?

klotzlube.com will get you their fine benol castor oil

or just buy a fuel with a castor/synthetic blend

add enough oil to bump the % up to 20 or 22 this will also lower the overall % of nitro

dont know if this will help the plug problem you have but many engines do a lot better in all respects with a little castor. i use all castor fuel after years of trying all the different blends out there

Sig also has castor, and a little castor is a wonderful thing.

have you tried the fox plug with the long idle extention bar? OS F is very good. I usually use one of the two depending on what I'm trying to accomplish.

No, I haven't. I use mostly the OSF plugs because of both 2/4 stroke engines I run together. Thanks for the advice!

I have had excelent results with the Fox Miracle Plug in both 2&4 stroke engines. I have several, so haven't compared prices with OS recently.

Try the K & B 1L or HP plug. I run the HP on my OS and YS 61 with pipes and change a plug once a year maybe!
You could add an oz or 2 of castor but most fuels are fine for your specs. Instead of adding, just find a fuel that fits the bill. I usually go with minimal castor. I find the lower the brand name the more castor you should use. Fox motors are happiest with a ton of castor, while YS loves all synthetic!

You shouldn't be blowing out glowplugs like that.
I have a 61fx in a pattern plane and i have never once gone through a glowplug, as a matter of fact i never even have to adjust the needle when i fly. I use my own mix fuel. 20% oil (Klotz) 15% Nitro and the rest Methanol.

I use a O.S #8 Glowplug still the same plug that came with the engine 2 years ago.

Default Conclusion

I think basically what I gather from the postings, running oil instead of synthetic is the way to go for this engine. Don't run too lean and everything will return to normal. Thanks for all the efforts here guys, you've been a big help!
