Did/does YS make a 1.80 4-stroke engine?
I'm eyeing a plane to purchase, that the owner says has a YS 1.80 4-stroke engine. I can't seem to find anything on a 1.80....is there such an animal?

How about a 1.75, close enough?

Saito should take a page from that book & offer high compression CDI versions of the medium & big block singles as well as all of the multies. And utilize an inexpensive hall sensor triggered CDI, not that inductive crap.

I have found that the engine is a 140FZ. What kind of performance should I expect on a 10 pound airframe?

How about unlimited?
I've had FA150s on 16# airframes & it was pretty impressive.
How are you planning to stuff a pumped 140 4c into a 10# airframe?
Do yourself a favor & get a CDI on that thing ASAP.

I have the same engine, same aircraft. Although Patrick says 10#, I would check it, when you get your hands on it. Most people found the plane a little heavier than quoted, however the 140 hauls it around with authority and will hover around 60% throttle. The 140 is not pumped, it has a pressurized fuel system. First thing to check is that the fuel tank and lines are absolutely pristine. Although it will run in 15%, the more nitro you give it the better it likes it as the needle develops a broader tuning range and it develops more power. The YS importers recommend 20/20 fuel and I have used 30% heli fuel.

I finally got to the bottom of this. The engine is a 1.40DZ, which I believe is a pumped engine. I went ahead and pulled the trigger and bought it. I hope to pick it up this week. At the very least, it should be "interesting flying".....

The 140DZ is better yet. Will spin an 18x6 JXF or Xoar at 8600+RPM still a bit rich.
That's a good 3-400 RPM better than the 140L or sport or Saito 1.80.

Yup, the DZ is a step up from the FZ or Sport and is pumped. On the Patrick Ultimate it should provide all the power desired.

FWIW, the 1.40 YS is at least as strong as most other 1.80's.

I have a Saito 180 that will blow it away. I'll bet it would run right W/the YS175cdi. 8850 W/a Dynathrust 18 X 8.

That's not off the shelf performance like the YS is. I've had two Saito 180's and they are great engines just not on the level of YS 140 performance unless you modify it.

Actually I had far less than $440 in the engine itself. ($347.75) I had a clapped out neglected/abused FA150 from which I used the case, cam, pusrods, rockers, etc. I used it as a basis for the [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1754616]HIGH COMPRESSION FA180 PROJECT.[/link]
I am so pleased W/the outcome that I'm going to go reduce the case deck on the stock FA180 that I have to get the same results.
Heck it uses 20% less fuel than the stock FA180!
Here's the 1st prototype W/the stock FA180 carb on 15% Cool Power.
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xaiAR8Yelc[/youtube]
I'd bet that YS11140DZ won't flip start & idle like that. Although CDI would tame it down a lot.
I've managed to get [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1769449]SIGNIFICANT POWER IMPROVEMNTS[/link] since this video was shot. The 220 big bore carb picked up 400 RPM & 30% nitro got another 400 RPM. There's 9000 in it W/some better (pressurized) fuel delivery & tuning, it was surging to 9000.

What fuel do you guys suggest I use in the YS? I have Saito, OS, and Magnum 4-strokes, but this is my first YS.

Main thing is 20% oil. I like 30% Nitro. All synthetic. I run this in all my 4-strokes. Saitos love it too.

Hey Thumbskull, do you fly @ the ''Indy R/C South'' field out east of Whiteland?

Yes, and at Atterbury (Johnson County Park) in Edinburgh on occasion.

Yep, I flew at both of those fields when I lived in Trafalgar. For some reason I liked to fly @ the Indy South field better even though it was 2X as far. The Atterbury club seemed too cliquey for me in those days.
I soloed @ Atterbury. George Fetterman helped me out. I had a PCM radio in my Sr Telemaster. (W/a Saito FA150) there were no compatable buddy boxes so George would take it "2 mistakes high" & give me the radio. I managed to solo W/O crashing.
I belonged to the Indy South club & bought most of my stuff from Barb @ Hobby R/C.

Barb sold her shop and is easing into retirement and is actually learning to fly. I learned at RC South back in '81-'82 and built 4 planes then life happened and I got out for a few years.
The club just renewed the lease on the land and looks like it will be there for a while.
I got back in the hobby with the release of the DX7 and have really enjoyed 3D since. Seems like there are more 'grumpy old men' at RC South now than Atterbury these days.

I saw Barb there on 1 occasion.
I moved to the North country in '98, crashed my PT-19 sortly thereafter & let things set for 14 years as I raised 2 kids.
I'm into (not too detailed) scale, but I like to have lots of power on tap when I want to play.
My 1st Sr Telemaster ended up W/CDI on the FA150 back in '96 & after several bumps & bruises W/the repairs that ensued, It bacame a big high wing sport plane. After converting to bolt down wings W/minimal dihedrel, 0° incidence & wing struts, it would knife edge & go 300' or so vertical from a shallow dive pulled up from 20-30' altitude.
In the spring of '97 I put it straight in @ WOT @ Atterbury when I mis-judged altitude when I entered a slit "S". Most spectacular crash I ever saw bar none! No witnesses or video though. [&o]
I flew @ the Indy South club on a trainer cord in August. I'm still rusty from the14 year hiatis.

I weighed the plane today. While it isn't 10lbs, it is 12lbs.....still should be impressive performance, don't you think?
