Skid, there is an easy way to check without pulling the cam cover off. Place the piston at tdc on the end of the exhaust stroke and the beginning of the intake stroke. Both valves should be open an equal amount and should alternately open and close a little when rocking the crankshaft back and forth at tdc

A) I agree, for sure check your Tappet Lash, it's a must,
B) make sure you are using a quality Glow Plug, I wouldn't take a brand new TT 4St Plug for free !!
C) know that for the most part that most wood props do load an engine more than plastic props,, example> if you are turning 8000 with an APC 14x8 you would need a quality wood prop around 14x5 or 14x6 to turn that same, or close to that 8000,
but then again there is the Cam Timing, I have read about Saito's Cam Timings being off

TS, as you put additional time on it, it may wake up some more as the new fuel cleans it out. Was the exhaust valve lash too small or excessive? Too loose will seldom effect the rpm much. Thanks, Dave
