Como S Engine

Como S Engine
I recently traded for a couple planes and ended up with a Como S .90 engine. It is nice and tight and doesnt appear to have run much. It will be going in a P51 that the builder set up for a OS .90. The OS mounts are further apart(or at least that is how he attached them) so I will need to do a little work to mount it. My question is - I also have a OS 1.20 4 stroke, is the Como a good engine or should I mount the 4 stroke?

Como was a decent brand, actually an "economy" brand originally made by SuperTigre. I was pretty happy with my smaller ones, back in the day. Not super power houses, though. So your 1.20 probably has a fair bit more moxie. But it all depends on what size plane, and what size props you want to run it in.

Como is probably the best 'knock off" line of engines in the history of of this hobby. They were built by Super Tigre and are just as good as the name brand Super Tigres. While I haven't personally operated a .90, my experience with other Como's was nothing short of excellent. We all hate to see an engine be "punished, and abused" through misuse. Nobody made more durable engines then Super Tigre, before they were built in China when quality slipped. It's always hard to recommend a particular engine for a particular airplane without knowing many details about the application, but if the original builder set it up for a OS.90 I would expect the Como to be an appropriate replacement.

I ran a COMO 60 for many years. Great engine. It was my understanding back in the day that the COMO line were Super Tigre's built for world engines. Put a 13x8APC on that 90 and you won't be sorry. If it's like other Super Tigre's it dose not need a lot of nitro. 10-15% will run great through it. I also liked Fox miracle plugs or OS "F" in mine. The OS 8 is a good plug but would be my third choice for this particular engine.

These were not economy engines at all and were custom made for World Engines. In fact, they were as good or better than their supertigre counterparts.
Check this out, for example: 40 Engine Shootout Pt1
I know it's a .40's shootout but this holds for the whole line.Excellent engines!

What did you decide to go with,
now that a few months have passed by?

I found out the plane wasn't actually a P51 so I ended up trading it off. It was a Martin Bristol MB5. It needed some parts that werent available and I dont think I could have done it justice. I found someone with more experience building that used to have one. He was glad to get a second chance with the plane and I got a Great Planes Cessna 182 that was ready to fly.

Most of the Como engines that were ultimately sold retail were mail order sales from Indy RC in Indianapolis. This was near the time that World Engines lost the distributorship of OS and Super Tigre to Great Planes. When that Sorry day came, prices on both lines went up substantially almost overnight.
The entire Como line was first rate.
