Engine Version - New or Old??

How do you identify the version of a used engine. I just purchased a older OS 70 4 stroke engine. How do I tell if its a new or older version?

There's a Surpass I and then there is the Surpass II with the black valve cover and both needles on the same side. Prior to the Surpass one, it was a 65.
