Saito is the best four stroke glow engine.
New Saito 65 needed new bearings after 75 flights.
New Saito 100 needed new bearings after 5 flights.
Used Powermaster 20/20. Engines ran beautifully, but developed loud audible bearing noise.

Airflow:
You didn't learn your lesson on the first one, so you had to do it twice.
"AAC" not only stands ofr "Aluminum/Aluminum/Chrome," it also stands for Aiways Add Castor.
Synthetics are a step or two above snake oil, but they do not lubricate or protect as well as castor oil.
Either start using a fuel with some castor from the supplier, or add 4-5 ounces to each gallon you buy. Your engines (and your wallet) will thank you.
Bill.

What's the opinion on these bearings? I hope to get a Saito 100 next month but I don't want to have to keep reparing it.
I generally use synthetic because people who have stripped engines tell me that they look like new when they have been run on synthetic, although I understand the delights of castor and the gunk it leaves behind.
Bill you mentioned adding castor, does this have to be purchased from a specific source? Or will any castor oil do? Is there a good way of flushing out the left over castor gunk every now and then to stop a build up without stripping the engine?
Cheers.

Out of ten Saitos I own I bought a used .50 that had a leaky cylinder that Horizon replaced under warranty. None has ever needed bearings. I run WildCat 15% Premium Extra with 18% lube that is approximately 1.6% castor. Most run great on Fox Miracle plugs.

William---- the bearing thing on saitos I have 3 of them plus other 4 strks I use
wildcat fuels 5,10,15% nitro they are 18% syn oil I also add 3 oz castor per gallon
the math 128oz per gallon x18% is 23 oz oil /gal --3 divided by 23 brings the oil
up to 13% castor /syn oil mix. total oil % 20 to total. Have done this long before
saito bearing issue came up. Oil is cheap engines are expensive. You are right
cheap insurance. my personal view any 4 stroke should have some castor lots
of stuff going around in there cams, gear, pushrods, besides bearings

RE: Saito is the best four stroke glow engine.
we use omega 4/s - 18% oil - 15/3castor - saito is a fine engine.
ps. don't forget the after run, lots of oil into the bearings!!!

To all who have asked:
My fuel of choice is Omega 15% for all my engines, except the 1/2A sizes. The little ones get 25% Cool Power, with 5 oz castor added per gallon.
Larger grocery stores carry Baker's AAA castor oil, or you can get "Laxative" castor from most drug stores. Or get the Sig packaged castor from your LHS, order it from Tower, so forth. Many sources for castor oil.

Speak true
Several of my club members refer to Saito as "Chrysler", OS as "Ford/Chevy", and YS as the "Cadillac" of the 4-strokes, and I tend to agree with them.

Richard:
"Speak True" is an old Kentucky idiom, like "Don'cha Know."
The meaning is "In my experience" or "What I have found' - I had no intention to give any implication of less than total veracity on your part.
Sorry if you took it that way, it wasn't what I meant at all.

Hey guys,
Put it in language that everyone can understand! This is an international forum and most other countries consider all American cars to be crap screwed together by drunken and drugged rejects from inner city schools. Having been involved in drug testing for a major pharmaceautical company, I know that it's not too far from the truth.
How about ,
Saito=Audi : good engineering and excellent performance
OS=BMW : nice, but everybody and his brother has one
YS=Porsche : expensive, but worth it
Max

Strykaas:
Never used the Motul oils, as I understand they aren't even available in the US. I have used several polyoxide oils, mostly from Wakefield (Castrol) but the Castrol brands here aren't Wakefield anymore, either. About the only ones easily available here are the Klotz oils, and you have to be careful to get the ones that will mix with methanol.
Saito equivalent to Audi? Please. While I know the Audi cars have improved greatly in the past few years, I would still rather have a Ford. And I'd buy a dozen Chrysler products before that Ford. Let's say Saito is the Mercedes, OK?
Bill.

RE: Saito is the best four stroke glow engine.
Well I liked my Saito 72 so much I recently bought 3 more Saitos (40, 91, 100). I would say that YS is the only better four stroke, simply due to the power (I have a YS 120 FZ and love that, keep looking for an excuse to buy a 110)
As for fuels, still trying different ones. Currently using Prosynth 15%, but after 1 1/2 gallons, decided that the Coolpower 15% I was using previously was better generally (though it worked well in the YS)
Previously used Formula Irvine 10%, which looks like the same oil make up as the Wildcat you have in the US. I would try a 15% of that but Model Technics don't do one.

RE: Saito is the best four stroke glow engine.
My .000002 cents worth,
At least on a new enigne it only makes sense to add some castor if it is not already in the fuel. Used in the first gallon it will not gum or carbon up the valves, etc. and it might just save something long enough to get it broke in a little bit. After that, go with whatever floats your boat.

Sprink.
I don't know if you are aware that we can get Wild Cat over here now. If you cant get it locally give Liskeard Models a call on (01579) 344414 and they'll either tell you where you can get some or send some to you. It's become the main fuel for alot of us down here.
As for the engines and cars debate, well I wouldn't want to upset all you folks that live with he rather absurd 55. Come and have a play on some of the UK's finest B roads and then see what you think (ok Bill I know you might have played on the track, dosen't count if there's nothing coming towards you and the road isn't lined with a solid Cornish Bank).

SJ:
Our "rather absurd 55" is no more, we are getting more reasonable limits in some places. And I've had many enjoyable drives with an 1100cc rear engined machine on twisty back roads, and yes, you meet the odd car now and then going the opposite direction.
What I enjoyed most were mountain roads where you could look across the cut, see the road was clear, and then blast around that lumbering sedan that's blocking traffic. Or the truck pretending to be a mobile chicane.
Great fun. But we need to stay with r/c here.
