Hogwash, the TT .42 is a wonderful engine. In fact it is the most powerful bushing engine in its size class.

However, I always recommend a .46 ball bearing size engine because you can always use the power to help you get out of a bind and most people will use their first engine on their second airplane.

Here are some good pics:
TT .46 Great engine for the money.
Magnum XLS .46 Also a very powerful and affordable engine.
Evo .46: Newbie proof reliable engine.

OS .46FX Industry standard that commands inflated price for its product.

One Question? Have you bought everything separate, there are so many complete deals these day and they are good, Tower hobbies has two complete arf kits with radio, engine and plane, and so does Horizon Hobbies. These RTF kits are great, it takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete your plane by turning a few wing nuts, installing an aluminum tube in the wing a strip of tape and connecting the control rods to the control horns and your done. Engines are installed pre-set and broken in, one tank of fuel to test run. Radios are standard four bangers from JR or Futaba. I have observed these planes fly, and operate very user friendly. Now for your question, every person has their prefered engine for trainer application. I have had some of the earlier TT engines as well as OS bushing engines, I prefer them over their ball bearing counter parts. They are easy to run in and they are ***** cats to start and run, almost maintaince free. If i were you, I would buy the gp42, fly the heck out of the trainer learn everything you want to know about trainer flight find a newby just getting into the hobby sell him your trainer set up for a couple of hundred dollars. Then buy some primo gear and go to town on your next plane, this time buy keeper stuff like Saito four strokes, a good budget priced computer radio and your plane of choice. Have fun!!!!

danieljm-RCU, I have a GP42 on a very heavy Tiger Sport, and it flys great with it, no problems with power, mine blows oil all over the place though, but its getting wore out, I took the baffle out of the muffler too, this gave it an extra kick. I have had it on 2 diffrent airplanes. I would agree Chinooker too, I would go with one you can use in you second plane, the Pro 46 is an awsome engine at a great price, I have 2 of them and never had any serious problems with them. I will say if you cant get a 46, go with the GP42, great engine.

No question about it I'd go for the 3W 200iB2TS Should be enough power.

Actually, just like everyone else on this thread I'd also recommend the TT46Pro. Good bang for the buck. Or maybe one of the new Magnum 46XLS.

Daniel, I went from my trainer straight into GIANT SCALE......I can not answer which engine is best, but I can give some advice.

If this is your VERY FIRST plane, get an engine that is easy to run, get an INEXPENSIVE engine, and run it about 600 RPM rich for about 2 tanks of fuel.

Just make sure that it runs well enough to fly and not die when you idle down. Then you can lean it out to between 300 and 400 RPM rich. I do not own but just a couple of glow engines, but I have tuned many. I do own an OS 65LA which a lot of people will tell you they are crap....this one has OVER 400 flights and I have never had any trouble with it. It is all in the way you break it in and run it. LEAN runs will destroy your engine.

I'd recommend the TT 42 or 46. Both great engines with plenty of power and reliability. The price is right also.

How about a Cox .049 C/L engine?

I havent had any first-hand experiances with the VMAX 46, but there were a couple of guys at a field I fly at that had them, from what I understand they are good engines too... One was on a fairly heavy Hobbico Superstar trainer and it flew very nice. They are cheap for a Ball Bearing 46, richmondrc.com lists them for $67.95, that about $10 less then a TT Pro46.

I'd suggest an Irvine .53 and then you can use it on your next couple of planes. Put a 12x6 three blade on the .53 and fly longer than you'll want to fly on 10 or 12 oz of fuel. And, it is so smooth it is easy on your equipment.

Irvine would without a doubt be my choice. I have a .53 on my trainer but its a .65 Size trainer so i guess a .53 on a .40 size trainer would be a little too much overpowered. My Trainer is a Graupner Trainer 65. According to the manual you should fit an .60 OS-FX or a .65 OS-LA. But thats WAY too much. The plane ways 2700Grams now, and my Irvine .53 with 12x6 Graupner 2-blade has 3200Grams of thrust. So its overpowered already With just too much engine you have the risk that your plane still fly's with your engine idle so that makes your landings quite hard

But my choice would be Irvine or MVVS

My .53 spent its first year on an RCM 40 trainer, the 12x6 three blade held the rpm to 10,800, it would easily pull the plane at half throttle and got fantastic fuel ecomomy, it was not overloaded with the 12x6 three blade because a 13x6 is one of the recommended props. A Webra .50 is another very user friendly engine that is real easy to tune, light and reliable.

Don't base your sole decision on manufacturer's "HP" figures. Many of these figures are exaggerated by the engine manufacturers. True test of power is to compare rpm figures on the same prop and fuel. There used to be a website that had figures for almost every engine but it appears to no longer be up.

They are good engines also. They run reliably, but some of them have a airleak problem that might prevent it from shutting down when the throttle is closed. They might take a little longer to break in because of their real ABC construction(unlike O.S. ABN nickel construction) but they will probably last a little longer.

First plane? Save your money and get a MECOA .46; I have one and it's a great motor. I traded in an old junk motor and paid $49.00, ($69.00 without trade in). Ball Bearing, true ABC and twin needle carb. It has 95% the power of my friends OS .46FX for 1/2 the price!

Do you have access to magnum engines? Get the magnum 46, Gms is a good savings but you want quality and quantity air time get the next most inexpesive engine which is a magnum.Have a good time flying.
