hi

just purchased and put on airplane an OS LA 46 engine. have gone through breakin and have it installed on plane. problem is the engine has lots of fuel and oil on it after a flight very wet. seems to be a very large loss of fuel around front of engine and engine is very wet. have really timed the flight time to determine may how much loss of fuel is involved.

is this normal for the particular engine?
I have heard this is a very good engine and had heard nothing bad about it but wonder if this is normal. anyone else having this problem?

No....

If the engine is that wet after a flight, you should be able to determine where the fuel is coming from by giving the engine a thorough wipe down and then running it on the ground....

The same thing happens with my 15LA. Fuel leaks around the bushings and covers the engine in fuel. I doubt you would be wasting any signifigant amount of fuel, unless the fuel was pouring out or something...
The 46la is a good engine by the way,

Ive had several of these motors and they've all been a little wet but nothing like dripping if that's what yours is doing. Making or buying a muffler to cylinder gasket does help and of course making sure fuel connections are tight.

thanks for reply...the engine is not dripping with fuel but is noticable wet. seems like a lot of fuel but really have not time run to determine how much running time I am losing if any. never have an engine get this wet in running. maybe its normal for this one.

Don't be too concerned with a wet front end. It is how the bushing/bearing gets lubricated and as these motors don't have a return grove cut into the bearing it has to go out the front. It is not a sign that the motor is defective and I've seen motors with worn out bushings soldier on for a few more years just weeping a little more fuel the it should.
