The Best beginner's bushing .25 engine
Hi Guys,
I am wondering which the best .25 engine is in the sub-$60 bracket, subject to the following PRIORITIES:
(1) Beginner-friendly: ease of running-in and operation
(2) reliability
(3) Safety (needle position)
(4) Weight
(5) power
(6) needs to be cowl-compatible (access to needle)
Candidates : OS LA-25, TT 25GP, Magnum XL 25, Norvel Big Mig 25, other?.
Reminder: under $60 (therefore no Ervine, FX, Webra etc.).
Thanks for your opinion.

I wouldn't take an LA. I like ball-bearings better hmz...i would take the Magnum XL .25 if i had to choose from your list. If i would do it my way i would get an MVVS or Irvine. But in this case the Irvine is way too expensive so i would order an MVVS.

The Big Mig is a fine engine, very powerful, and very high quality. You will need a spanner wrench for keeping the head tight, especially when new. This will take you over your $60.00 limit.

The OS .25FP answers ALL the comments you had. It is light years ahead of the LA (which I would never buy). Used 25FP's on RCU sell for under $40.00.

Hi!
The OS .25 LA is a very nice engine with lots of power. Very userfriendly! Very reliable idle! Instant throttle reply. Very easy to start. Same power as the old FP series.
This is the engine I would trust in a multi-engine airplane. The OS is very light as it doesn't have ballberings therefore suitable for scaleaircraft where weigt is a consideration (weight is always a consideration..).
I have a Kyosho PBY Catalina powered by two OS .15LA engines swinging APC 8x5 props and this airplane is a very pleasant aircraft to fly from water with totally reliable engines. I use 15% Motul "Micro" all-syntetic oil and 5% nitro..the rest methanol.
Regards!

Thanks for the recommendations
I will take a look at the XL - but I am afraid it's too heavy for my project.
