saito 91 break-in?
hi,
i've just got my funtana with a saito 91 and was wondering on the best way to break in the engine? also what fuel to use?
i make my own fuel with methanol, castor oil and nitro, so what % of each?
i'm going to be using the enya cold glow-plug since i stay in a very hot place which is at sea level.
thanks

Download the owners manual at www.horizonhobby.com.
They have detailed breakin instructions. Tlink for the manual is on the web page for the 91s.
Follow their instructions and you can't go wrong.

TT:
Agreement with Meesh on the manual.
Fuel? I like 18% oil, 15% nitro, balance methanol. For the first gallon or two you might want to go to 20% on the oil.
If you have a source of good synthetic you can use 13-15% synthetic and 5% castor oil, still with 15% nitro. This will keep your plane and engine cleaner, and the 5% castor is all you need for protection.
Bill.

I had to change out my factory Saito glow plug before it would idle reliably. This was after the initial break-in bench runs. I went to a Fox Miracle Plug, but I hear that OS#8 is also very good in Saitos.

Break it in like the book says. Don't exceed 4000 rpm for the first couple of tanks. You'll need to leave the battery on and throttle back. Mix up a half gallon of castor blend fuel and add another 6 ounces of castor. Run this first at a slobbering rich setting. It will take a couple or three gallons for the engine to be really good.
I have 2 and if you run them in right, they will have tons of compresaion and plenty of power. Saitos are made from good stuff. It takes a while to break them in, but they last forever.

How can anyone fail to agree with the sage from FL... I only wish to add that the Saito valves, et al do stay cleaner running mostly synthetic oil like Klotz after break-in. I use Wildcat with a bit of castor thrown in to get it to 20% oil.
Nice to hear from you Ed, when are you going to bring your wife to the casinos and stop by our field to fly? Our summer Fly-in is this Saturday and the chicken is g-o-o-d.
