Default .49 Cox Engine

Hello,
I own a older .49 Cox Engine it has no muffler or throtle setup. I want to take the engine and make an airboat but I have a problem. I cant find a throttle kit for it anywhere. I was wondering if anyone knows how to make some sort of throttle setup run through a standard servo. If there is no way to make a setup could you please tell me a website where I can buy a throttle kit for cheap!!

Default .49 Cox Engine - NOT! It's an OH!-49!

It will be simpler to locate a small engine that was equipped with some kind of speed control. Cox did sell throttles for the most expensive of their motors, the Medallions and TeeDees, but Estes has discontinued production of those. If you have either one of those model Cox 049's, and can get a junker RC version of either off eBay, swap off the one on the junker onto yours.

If you have the much more common, cheap Cox, with a reed valve in the backplate, a few of those had a rudimentary speed control at one time in the form of exhaust baffles that opened and closed under servo control. But that rig would be rare to find on eBay, I suspect. I have had a forty-something year-long dislike of small engines below an .09. They always seemed to have some kind of alien intelligence and constantly bit my fingers any time I put fuel in one.

So I started avoiding the little demons back before 1960 or so. There are some beautiful little .06 and .07 engines on the market the last few years that look just like unsanforized larger engines that shrank in the wash -- neat throttles, working mufflers, the entire shooting match, and not particularly expensive for what you are getting. Look at the lovely little Thunder Tiger 07 particularly. I may even be tempted to venture below my .09 cutoff to play with one of those!
