Super Tiger or Tower Hobbies brand?
Hello,
I am looking at buying a new engine. I am considering either a Tower Hobbies or a Super Tiger. I was thinking about a 61 but I might go for the 75. I like the TH because the 75 is ABC. I have a Super Tiger G51 and I am quite happy with it. Also, I heard good and less good things about the TH.... Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Le fou

le fou,
I own both the TH and ST 75's and like them both. The TH 75 seems to have a bit more power. You can't go wrong with either one. The TH engine is a little cheaper, but it won't have the longevity of the ST. The ST will take longer to break in.
Just a couple of thoughts to help you decide. Good luck with either one you purchase.

In the .75 I would get the T.H., the S.T. gets the nod in the .90 size.
One place where the Fellas goof up with the Tower motor is the carb. It is a very
tight fit into the spigot on the crankcase, with only the pinch bolt to squeeze the
aluminum in the case....and hold firm the carb. You need to tap that carb down
tight against that o-ring....if you don't, you will have an air leak.
If you have an air leak, it will make tuning nearly impossible, and to make matters
worse, the amount of air leaking into the crankcase will change as the temperature
of the engine changes....further hampering your efforts.
Also you will find that the engine won't shut off with the trim....even though it
appears that the carb is fully closed.
FBD.

Guys, I don't know if this is true or not but isn't the Tower .75 based on the old Supertigre casting molds? Seems that I read here a couple of years ago that the GMS factory in China aquired the older ST molds to make their own version? Seems plausable, especially now that ST's are being made in China. Hey Jim, where are ya? Does anybody else know what I'm talking about, or was I dreamin'?

No, that's not correct. The old Super Tigres had a bolt-on front housing, the Tower is a one piece crankcase.
From what I've heard, ASP, Magnum, GMS and Tower engines are all made in the same facility in China.

There were some ST's with 1 pc. cases though Woody, cuz I have some of 'em! I'm talking earlier vintage ST's that were "obsolete" so the casting molds were sold off. W8YE, didn't you mention something about this? My curiosity is gettin' to me now I guess...

Yeah, I know Super Tigre had one-piece cases on the old bluehead 60s, and on the 71, but the crankcases on the Tower 76 and 61 are different than those old Super Tigre engines.

Compare the Tower engines, the GMS engines and the Magnum XLS engines. They all look a lot alike to me. Maybe all the "major" Chinese engines are the same or the factories share data.
I understand that the Super Tigre tooling was bought by Great Planes and sent to China for production.

RE: Super Tiger or Tower Hobbies brand?
I can't speak for the Tower engine since I've never tried one, but I've been trying to get a SuperTigre g51 running now just about every weekend for 3 months. I've tried every tuning setting imaginable on both the low end and main needle, 5 or 6 different brands of glow plugs, completely disassembling and reassembling my fuel tank and lines, and just plain old cursing at it repeatedly. Probably burned a full gallon of fuel in it by now, and haven't taken the plane off of the runway. It always seems to run good in the pit area for 30 seconds or so, then when I get to the runway it won't throttle up, just dies, like it's way too rich.
If I lean it up then it runs at full throttle great, but won't idle...
If I hadn't already cut a big ugly hole in my cowl for the huge muffler on the SuperTigre I would replace it with something different.. As it stands, I think this plane is going to find a permanent home hanging up in my garage.
Anyway, I don't think I'll ever buy another SuperTigre engine.

RE: Super Tiger or Tower Hobbies brand?
A friend of mine bought a ST 51 (almost like new) at a swap meet for $35.00. The owner could not get it to run. I spend 30 min disassembling the engine & re assembled it. it started on the first try and immediately ran very good.
The previous owner had the low end needle turned out 18 turns. It should be about 2 to 2 1/2. It has ran good every since.
Send it to me and I will make it run and you pay for shipping bothways.

Well, you didn't really say what you wanted it for.......
If I wanted to turn up some rpm's in the 75 class, I would choose the ABC TH 75. BUT, if I wanted a motor for torque and longevity, and not wanting to wind it up, I'd take the Super Tigre....in a heartbeat.
What'ja want it fer?

Yeah, I tried all the suggestions on that faq page a couple months ago... And had several people with much experience with engines, a couple who own SuperTigre's (and say they've had no trouble) look at it, nobody has been able to do anything with it so far.

TY....
....if the engine is that problematic, you might have a bad air leak. If the carb
is sealed, the front bearing is probably the culprit. The S.T.'s I have owned
(.46 and .61) were very easy to set, and required no further adjustments
to speak of.
You could pressure test the engine....or just replace the front bearing. I prefer
front bearings rubber sealed on the outside. If the bearing doesn't fit snugly
in the case....remedy it.
