CM:
The better quality feeler strips have both inch and metric markings on them. See picture.
I would suggest you recheck the sizes you want, though. The 3mm for example, is almost 1/8" so I think you really want 0.3mm, and so forth.

RE: Where To Buy Feeler Gauges
Thanks for the suggestions, but now that I'm awake and have re-read the paperwork for my Magnum XL 52 4-stroke, it takes a .04mm gauge and not more then .1mm to reset the valve clearance. I bought this engine used a year or so ago and did not get the gauges so I'm looking for some place that might have them that small. If all else fails, I guess I could just use my TT gauges and get close.
Thanks again,

Anybody know where to get a set of go/no-go gauges in the sizes required? That would make setting the lash almost fool proof.

I guess I'll do some checking at the local auto parts stores and see what I can come up with.

Bill, have some good feeler gauges, but I remember using go/ no-go gauges years ago. It took all the need for feel out of the equation and you knew you had an on spec setting. Next time I see a Snap On truck I will flag him down, need a couple of repair kits for some 30 year old ratchets anyway.

Flag the truck down and you'll either get the repair kits or new ratchets as replacements. Don't count on ther feeler strips though, they are special tools for working on Detroit Diesel, he may have to order them for you.

Bill, you just gave me a chuckle about something I have not thought about in years. For all the precise settings you went thru, and the precision tools they had right down to the little twirl gauge thing I can't remember the name of, it all came down to the feel of the pins between the racks and the roll over of the ball socket at the injector. Its been 20 + years. Life was simpler then.
Thanks

The "Little Twirl Thing" was the injector timing gauge. Came in several lengths for different timing.
You should also remember the extremely accurate gauge for the air gap in the Detroit governor - you set it by looking at the oil it squeezed out. Remember?
But it worked fine.

RE: Where To Buy Feeler Gauges
Bill,
Forgot about that one. Also remember the add on to the gov. sping that Detroit did for us so a driver had a twist cable on the dash that he could Idle up a 8V-71 to 1,000 RPM's for pump off. All our engines were derated down to about 265 HP. When the drivers found that by putting rubber bands on the handle binding it in low idle position it messed up the governor setting and they could go racing with the Greyhound buses. Now if we would have had the injectors sized for a 318 they might have pased them. Also remember doing oil anaysis and finding we realy didn't need to change the oil, just the filter, we always did tho. Man those things could use a lot of make up oil in days run. And we complain about a little oil on the bottom of an RC plane!

Here's the Snap-On step gauge. Memory said it went down to a thinner minimum, got mine out, doesn't go thin enough for the Saito valves. Also hasn't gotten as expensive as I thought.

Or how about the drivers changing the button in the PTg injection pump? Along with a slight mis adjustment of the AFC the Cummins NT855 engine would jump from 250hp to 400hp. Eighty thousand pounds at 105 mph on I-24 going from Chattanooga to Nashville Tennessee. At least that's what the cop said was showing on his radar. A BIG ouch. No, I was not driving it.
We did oil changes at 16,000 miles on the big engines, they all had the "Luberfiner" system on them.

O. S. makes a valve adjusting kit now that they no longer include the tools and gauges with the engines. The kit has a wrench for the rocker arm nuts and an allen wrench for the studs along with a .04 and a .1 MM feeler gauge all in a small plastic box. All OS dealers should have them or be able to get them. I think they sell for around $10.
