hi guys,
I am new to this hobby. I am trying to tune my engine. I am not sure when to adjust the low end needle and when to adjust the high end. Here is the problem, I started with setting the high needle to 2 turns and the low needle to 1 1/5. I noticed with after unflooding the engine each time, the engine would run for 5 sec and stop. I thought it was rich and leaned the high needle by 4 click and low needle by 1/4 turn. Now the engine runs, but its still not idle speed. I am not sure which one to adjust to get it running right. I was hoping some can help me with some guide lines or direct me to some good tutorial.
Thanks in advance.
Lance

Once you get it running, run it at full throttle and adjust the mixture so that it runs slightly rich of peak rpm. Get the high-speed needle right first, then slow it down to idle. If it quits right away, it is more than likely lean on the low speed needle. If it idles but hesitates when you quickly increase the throttle setting, it's more than likely rich on the low speed needle. Adjust the low speed needle accordingly, then run it at full throttle again. You might need to adjust the high-speed needle again at this point because the low speed needle still allows fuel through while the engine is running fast, and will affect the high speed settings. Keep working at it until you can get it to run well at full throttle, idle, and get a good transition. Also, when you first start the engine, leave the glow plug connected for a minute or two until it gets warmed up, and don't start messing with the needles any more than necessary to get it running until it is warmed up.

Thanks Charlie,
I am working on engine tuning. I have leak near the muffler and engine exhust, right now I am waiting for the seal to dry, hope fully I will get it right. I will let you know on the progress.
Thanks again,
Lance

I have the same setup in my Raptor helicopter. I am running an Enya #3 plug 30% fuel. I am at about 1 3/4 of a turn out on the high end just over 1 on the low end. Mine does idle a little on the rich side. That helps the mid range to not lean out when it gets a little hot or to hang on the pipe when throttling back.
Have you read the tips and setups on Ron Lunds site?? There is also good reading on Heliproz site. Check with the helicopter guys here and on heli-only boards.

I'm assuming that u are breaking in a new engine... For breaking in, OS recommends the use of lower nitro fuel and a hotter glow plug such as the A3. Another reason for starting with a lower nitro fuel (eg one with 5 or 10% nitro) is that while u are learning to hover, chances are, u won't be running at a high enough rpm to keep things cool. Since u are running on the hotter side, its not good to be on 30% nitro.
