Default Old K&B 45

Does anyone know anything about this K&B 45? Such as specs or if it is a good/bad engine and why.

That K&B is the "Sportster" 45. Not a bad engine, but not a screamer.

Do a search on "Sportster," several threads discussing it.

My Sportster 45 pulled a 4*40 around beautifully - it's a great sport engine, but mine liked the big props - a 12x6. I got around 10,500 RPM out of it, and it was VERY reliable - just not a real powerhouse. Very quiet and easy starting.

It looks like yours is one of the later versions after they started machining off most of the head fins at the factory. Some of the early Sportster 45's that had the full length head fins had a problem with running too cool (the engines have no sleeve, just a plated jug and so cooled VERY well), so the fix was to machine a lot of the head fins off to help keep the head temp up during running. Like thge above posts said, if you can get it set up to run and transition well, make sure you put plenty of prop on it. They lug big props almost like a diesel!!! Even if you try smaller props, they just won't rev up much!

Dito on all of the above had mine on a trainer then a 4-star-40 ran mine with a 12x6 apc prop, people would ask if it was a 4 stroke. Super relieable:use some caster in your fuel.

Yes, it's the later style engine, but not the latest. It's about 10-12 years old, it has the "Ribbed" carb, but still has the front needle. The latest ones had a remote needle.

hi

I would not use either the k&b 45 or 65. in my opinion these engines are junk. thru stupidy I lost 2 airplanes using the 45 sporster. lost one sent engine back to k&b they worked on it returned it to me and I stupidly put in another plane with same results. don't gamble with it. this was the sporster series which is no longer made I believe. the older k&b 40 and k&b 61 were good engines. I am still using a k&b61.

good luckand happy flying
