Power Difference Between YS 140FZ,DZ, and Saito 180?
Hi,
I just flew my new Dave Patrick Ultimate today. It flies great and smooth on the sticks, and 3D's pretty good. I just have to work a few things out on it. I have a YS 140FZ in it. It has about 5 or 6 runs through it now, so it should start to be breaking in. So far all I used with is 15% S&W fuel, with a 17x8 APC. I have an 18x6 got for it to try. It will proabably be a better 3d prop. I also have some gallons of 25% S&W I will try next for my nitro. I have some 40% also, but I don't want to smoke the motor. Will it handle that much nitro?
On the verticle lines for aerobatics, it had enough of power, but I'd like some more. Maybe with the bigger prop and more nitro.
Just wondering how much power difference there is between the YS 140 FZ and DZ? I heard that the DZ has the power of a 3.2? Woud it put out the power of a 50CC gas engine like a DA??? How about the Satio 180, the DZ probably has more power.
I had some problem with it idiling steady with my trim staying at one spot. But I will work with that. Also my muffler came loose a few times. I will put some high temp lock tite on it.
Im happy with the Engne and airplane. It works great. Does one hell of a harrier and blender. Wow. Just would like some more power for some hovering and stuff. I'll try the bigger prop and nitro first, then maybe get a DZ.
Thanks
RYan

First you don't have nearly enough prop. I run a 17 X 8 APC on my YS 120 and it pulls almost 9k, so I think you're out of the power band. I'd try an 18 X 8. The following is from the YS performance web site. The FZ should be in between the sport and the DZ.
PROP SIZE RECOMMENDATIONS:
YS 140 Sport - 15 x 13, 16 x 12, 17 x 8, 17 x 10.
YS 140DZ -- 16 x 14, 17 x 12, 18 x 8.
Other prop sizes may be used as long as the engines run in the recommended RPM ranges. In hot weather and break-in of new engines, use the smaller prop sizes to lessen the load on the engine to help it run cooler.
RECOMMENDED RPM RANGES:
YS 140 Sport -- 8,000 to 9,000
YS 140DZ -- 8,000 to 8,500
Also you'll do a lot better with the higher nitro fuel. YS engines like at least 20% nitro and should have at least 20% all synthetic oil. Try the bigger prop and higher nitro and that engine will really come alive. As far as the power of a 50cc, I'd really doubt it. The current generation of 50s turn 22 x 10 props.

I have owned both the Saito 180 and YS 140 DZ. The Saito 180 should be pretty on-par with the YS 140 FZ, doing 17x8 @ about 9k. The 140 DZ will be about 500 rpm stronger on the same prop, but power is realized in a larger prop. I run 18x8 on my DZ, and it peaks at around 8500 rpm. That's about the same as the popular big 2-strokes like OS 1.60 FX and Moki 1.80.

I own all three engines. I have tried a OS 160FX on a CAP and replaced to with a YS 140DZ. At peak power they were about the same. For lower RPM torque the YS wins by a mile. For 3D the OS can stay home in my book. The Moki 1.8 would be a second choice but then why not the 2.1.

That's right. I never really liked the OS 160 for 3D type of flying. Its light weight and fuel economy is the impressive part. My Moki 180 does transition better than the OS, but nothing like YS 4-stroke.

My OS 160 FX runs perfectly. Broke-in the old fashioned way, short 5 minute heat cycles on the bench, cooled to stone cold, repeat. Gradually leaned to peak thru one gallon of fuel. Byron 5% nitro, 20% oil, APC 17X8 break in prop, stock muffler.
The standard Bisson muffler is too small. It needs a BGX or ST4500 muffler and they bolt right on, with two hobbico extensions they have the right back pressure and keep the plane clean. The dual snuffler muffler is very quiet and with Hobbico large deflectors I was getting 9400 rpm on a APC 18X6W with 15% Byron fuel.
I don't fly 3D but my transition on 5% nitro is flawless. No pump, no fuss, Many, many cases of fuel. APC 18X6W or Mejzlik 20X6 on in GP Gene Soucy Extra 300s. I get 6 to 8 fifteen minute flights out of a gallon.
The only time I had problems was when I switched to a Jett in-cowl muffler. I guess I don't know how to set up a tuned pipe. It did give an extra 300-500 rpm but I roasted two plugs and had four dead sticks.
