Default Using car engines in planes?

Is it okay to run a .12-.15 size car engine in a .10-.15 size plane? I've noticed that some of the new ones have RPM ratings up to 43,000 or so, HP ratings (for .12's) of 1.5 hp @ 38,000. Considering pretty much all car engines are made to run with a tuned pipe, I wouldn't mind putting an engine like that in a small plane.... HOT DOG! Why don't I see more car engines in these smaller airplanes?

Mop - the car engine is not taking a high load ... just through the transmission and to the wheels, also a car is only about 1.8 kgs while a prop might load a lot more than that especially when you are trying to pull a loop.

Car engine may work good with gear reduction ! Look into it more. 36,000 RPM with 3-1 reduction = about 12,000 RPM. That would be a good RPM for certain prop sizes. Just a Idea!!! Capt,n

Those of us who have been waiting for the next leap in technology in a .15 displacement 2-stroke engine can take solace in the fact the OS has delivered our wishes. The OS .15 CV-A was designed for Open A class combat, and although the engine bears a similar moniker to the very successful .15 CV car and buggy engine, the CV-A is "all airplane."

Cars have the luxury of being able to just sit on the ground and build up speed until the engine gets on the pipe and into it's narrow but powerful rpm range. Most of our sport, 3D, pattern, etc. type of airplanes need a wide and linear power band to get off of the ground safely.

yes it will work but you'll never get the engine up into it's powerband, probably won't be anymore powerful than the airplane .15s.

and nelson does have a .15 with a planetary gear reduction built into the front of the case...$$$$!

Got it, thanks guys. Guess I'll stick with the .15 CV-A and .15 and .10 LA engines. Thanks again, and have a Merry Christmas!

Everybody forgot to add that the prop won't bolt on. No prop no go. Dennis

A couple things,
Car engines will work with minor modification in small ducted fan planes.
Car engines tend to be way over-cooled so cutting off a bunch of cooling head fins would be in order.
I have seen a couple car engies that had enough crankshaft sticking out to where a thin prop could be used, of course a prop collar would need to be found.
If you can get a car engine up into its torqueband with a prop, I would not want to be anywhere near a prop spinning 30K (read ; very very dangerous, even when absolutly perfectly ballanced).
As soon as you increase the load on a car engine (ie;using props not gears), mor oil will be needed to protect the rod and crank pin area, which lowers the performance (but increases the low end torque) and makes it harder to get on the pipe.

Can it be done-- Yes
Have I done it--Yes
Is it worth it --NO
Is it practical-- NO

Just my experiences

Ok here it is I got it with an MVVS tuned minipipe and a 70 degree stack you can see that that stock glow head is the irvine car head with most of the fins cut off (it came that way from just engines It has a diesel head made by AJ colholic.it also has the extended collet
nut for the prop but the AP 09 prop nut also fits fine for prop installation it sort of got side tracked for other projects I am
planning to use it in a fred reese ultimate pipe ( when it get built 10=20 size) I am sorry I did not record numbers one the test runs
glow or diesel but both were impressive my thoughts a fox 15 will do just as well ,martin
and MERRY CHRISTMAS TOO ALL
