Default Laser 70

I have a new Laser 70 engine that I have tested on stand. It appears to run very well. Have any or you run these engines? IF so what airplane , how did it perform, etc. The manual said to run without nitro or castor. I tried it on no nitro on stand, it did run well. Now its time to mount and try for performance.

The engine is new and I know it is made in England. I am wondering about the power compared to the Saito 72.

The Lasers are, hands down, the best engines commercially available, IMO. That opinion is formed from 17 years of using various brands of model engines. I have a 150, but they all are pretty much similar in construction/operation.

They are designed to run on no nitro. Up to 15% will improve the idle, but WILL NOT give an appreciable increase in top-end power. Anything over 15% is simply wasted. It will not hurt anything.

They have less power output than an equivalent Japanese engine. The 70 will be equal to a 50-52-56 OS/Saito/Magnum; IOW, a 40-sized plane. My 150 is equal to a strong Jap 120.

So, less power; but your reward is an utterly reliable engine. If you want Saito 72 equivalency, you'll need the Laser 100 or 120.

Hello; I have a Laser 100 in a Balsa USA Taube, it is a big draggy 1913 mono wing that weighs 9 pounds. The Laser 100 is a torquey little monkey spinning a 15 x 8, I mix my own fuel for it with 0% nitro, it's my favorite engine. I like the workmanship, and the design. I know they claim to make less power then equivalent oriental four stroke, but I had a Saito 120 in the Taube before I got the Laser, and I think the Laser is about equal. I tried to buy a Laser 70 off a local fellow but he wanted a ridiculous amount for it, he didn't really want to sell it. It made similar power to a Surpass 70. I don't blamwe him my 100 is an awesome engine.

Hmmm... that's interesting. Guess the lower power dictum doesn't apply as much to the smaller displacements.

Anyway, they're great engines.

I did notice that the engine tuned right up and started idling right away. It seemed to idle slower that my Saitos. I haven't opened her up yet since it is new.

Hello; I like the way I can filll it with 0% flip start it first time and have it idling happily down low. so low that it whoops and pops and sounds so cool. Then taxi up and take off on about 1/2 throttle. Very quiet in the air, prop noise drowns out exhaust noise. Yes I like my 100. I wish I had Lasers in all sizes, but they're quite expensive here as you have to import them from England. What ever it cost, it's worth it.
