Default Royal 40 problems

I bought a Royal 40 about 15 years ago and up until last year it had never even been run. The engine looks to be in great shape but I just dont know how to set the needle valves. I started at about 2 turns out, but that seemed really rich. I leaned it slowly out and it ran better. It seemed to idle and have the best midrange around 1 1/4 turns out. However, when I accelerate to full throttle it would slowly accelerate, rev up, then die. This happens if the needle valve is set at just one or so turns out or a 2 turns out. The needle valve setting doesnt really seem to matter.

This has only been a problem with the Royals, that is why you don't see them anymore. Dennis

GV:

Looks like no experienced person is going to respond, so I'll stick my nose in.

Start the engine after opening the low speed needle a bit more, then play with the throttle and the high speed needle until it will go. Then just richen it a bit off peak and continue your run-in on it. After you have ten or fifteen minutes on it, start slowing it with the throttle, mess with the low speed needle to get it smooth and responding well.

Regardless of vacuum leaks you should be able to run it at speed, if you do have problems trying to get it to stay running at lower speed after getting the high speed close, pull the carb and backplate, seal them with the RTV we were talking about before. That should cure your difficulties.

Bill.
