OS peeling problem fixed?

Hello friends of the air:
I'm interested in purchasing an OS 61 FX, and am wondering if the OS liner peeling problem experienced on SOME engines has been corrected once and for all. What has your experience been with the latest "generation" OS engines in this respect?
Regards,
Misterpanda

The majority of peeled liners were on the 46FX engines, though there were some 61 and 91 engines involved as well.
As Dar pointed out, I have heard of only one 46AX shelling.
I'd say OS has the problem fixed as well as they can staying with ABN.
I still wont buy one.

I'm on my third OS 61(almost given to me) and so far this one hasn't peeled yet. But why pay a premium price for a mediocre power engine that may peel the liner. There are better choices for the money out there. And don't even ask about their remote needle valves. What happened to the company that made those incredible FSRs?

I also had as OS peeler and it was not an FX, but an older .40FP.
I think the .91 FX is a ringed engine with a steel sleeve (I checked with Adrian-RCU).
Nothing to peel there, but it had bad problems of its own, with fuel evaporating in the rear needle, Etc...
They re-vamped it since, I believe.

I gotta see a .91FX ABN. I don't think they made them, maybe a .91 fan engine or something. Where is Baxter when you need him with OS history.
The liner peeling problem is fixed and was fixed in late 2000 or 2001 as I recall. The main culprits were the .40 & .46SF engines, along with the first run or two of the .46FX. When OS switched the .40FP from a steel liner-iron piston to ABN, they also had some peelers. I have never heard of an OS .61FX peeling.

All:
I've not had one peel, maybe we should ask FB Dave what his were. I'm just going on my memory of the engines other than the 46FX listed in the peeler threads.
I am sure not all were 46 sized engines.
Bill.

They were peeling before the FX range ... I've got a 40FSR (vintage 1981) with a peeled liner. Fortunately it's peeled below the ports and the engine still runs like a swiss watch. Just got a 91FX in the air ... wow, it's fantastic in my 60 sized pattern plane, swings a 13x10 @ 10500rpm on 5% nitro / 15% Klotz + 5% BeNol. I've read so many posts claiming this engine is a POS but I can't agree, mine is excellent. Yes, it's an older model with the needle hard mounted on the backplate. That's my 2 bobs worth (that's 40 Aussie cents).

OK...what ABC/N engine from OS hasn't peeled? For their inconsistant quality, what they cost and the fact that they all have remote needle valves that I hate...I'll NEVER buy one. For the same amount you pay for an OS you could get an Enya or Webra. Either of which are just as user friendly, powerful and have a longer life...with ZERO problems to mention.
I guess it is a case of 'follow the leader' routine. ...Ol' Bob has one, I'd better get one, too. Screw that!

I believe the first models OS had with ABN replacing the ABC, were SFs (and affiliates), not FSRs.
Chromium does not need the surface integrity to bind.
It just binds with all of its back surface.
If you look at it under a microscope, the chromium, looks like dried desert earth, with deep cracks and all.
Every such piece is stuck hard to the brass base metal.
You can grind off an area of chromium, but the rest of the plating will stay put.
In ABN, the surface integrity is paramount, since the bind between the nickel and the brass is much weaker.
The copper flash-coat in current ABL improves the bind a bit, but still, one scratch and within a short period, the majority of the nickel coating is out the door.

So why doesn't TT have the peeling problem? There is nothing inherently wrong with nickel as a liner surface material -- it is enormously harder than the piston, so it isn't a wear point. If TT can make it stick like ***** to a blanket, what's the matter with OS?

It is my observation that since OS has changed their process of applying the nickle, their cylinders hold up as well as the Thunder Tigers. Also the after market companies that sell replacement jugs is down to one. However, the Magnum XLS 46 piston - cylinder assembly will work in a 46FX as a replacement for half the money.
Enjoy,

OS does not claim the problem has been corrected; they deny it ever existed.
Just one more reason to avoid them. If they will not admit such an obvious problem...
