RE: Saito 270 Twin
Bill I agree, but my search didn't show the 270 being sold in the last 5 to 7 years. I am concerned that the parts are not available and problems with the engine. Cylinder drop out for example. I have read the valve settings etc on the 300. From what I understand the 270 has a 8mm crank while the 300 is a 10,, was the 8 a problem with bending or worse breaking? Will the 10 MM crank for the 300 fit the 270. How is Kickback on the 270? I have the opportunity to buy a used 270 and 300. The plane is the mid west Extra 300 27%. It is designed to take a 50 cc gas or 300 4 stroke. I haven't found any weight for the 270 but the 300 is close to the weight of a gasser.
I am doing all the research before I build the bird. I really hate to build a plane then have to modify for a better engine. I built the Stinger 1.2 and put a ST 3000 on it,, what a dog combination that was. I pulled and gave away the 3000 and put a Saito 1.8 on it now it really flies.
I was considering the new Saito 2.2 for the Extra but the 270 option came up. Any thoughts. Power to weight on the Twin don't seem to be as good as the 2.2 and the fuel consumption,, 30+ oz tank and fuel pump on the twin vs the 2.2? Just many questions w/o answers and I would like to get some info before I plunk down the $$$$.. Thanks Jim

My 270 with the two supplied exhaust pipes weighs 4.5 pounds, rather heavy. I have converted mine to ignition and it runs really good but compared to today's light gas engines it is not that powerful. I have not run it for a good number of years but I think it burned about 2oz glow fuel /min turning a 20x10 prop. Don't remember the rpm.

Jim:
The FA-270T is indeed out of production. - and the replacement as you know is the FA-300T engines. I've tried to get firm specs on the 2.70 engine. As near as I've been able to find it has the stroke of the FA-120 and the bore of the FA-150 - 1.33x0.97 giving 2.695 total displacement.
It's going to be a rather heavy engine as at that age it will still be an ABC engine, the later ones are AAC, If my dimensions are right you might be able to install a pair of FA-150 cylinders and then have the AAC construction with a great decrease in weight. But that would add a couple hundred bucks to the cost of the engine.
Almost definitely interchangeable parts: Cams and tappets, valves and valve springs, gaskets and seals. Rocker covers, rockers, and rocker pedestals. Manifolding and carb.
Probably interchangeable parts: Cylinders, pistons, piston pins and rings, push rods and tubes.
Possibly interchangeable: Connecting rods.
Not interchangeable: Crankshaft.
The 270 is a good engine, but if there is the choice I'd definitely go for the FA-300T
In the range of our model engines, a single is going to have more useful power than a twin of the same size. But the twin is going to shake your plane a lot less. Weight is a bad point, specially with the older ABC twins, not so bad with the AAC. But the singles also have lost weight by going to AAC.
No reports on the Saito 2.2 yet, so nothing definite, but I'd guess the 270 twin should equal the 2.2 single everywhere but the weight. The FA-300T should beat it. Again, except for the weight.
The eight mm crank? Perfectly OK, not to worry. If you crash the engine you can bend a 10 mm crank, no added safety. Only real difference is how badly you can crush the prop hub. And the 8 mm does it well enough.
Bill.

RE: Saito 270 Twin
Bill thanks for the great information. I am looking at the 2.2 vs the 270,, sounds like the power to weight is in favor of the 2.2,, but the 300 would be a better choice. This will be for the Extra 27%. I think I will hold off on the 270 and go for the 300 based on the power to weight. If I were building a big cub it would be a good choice,, but for the Extra 300... I think I will go for the power. Thanks again. I really appreciate all who answered. Jim[sm=thumbup.gif]
