Default Saito FG-11 Gas Four Stroke

Greetings. I am getting ready to purchase this engine to install in a Tower Super Kaos 60 in order to practice pattern. Does anyone of have any experience with this engine. I have not owned a four stroke or gas r/c engine previously.
I have read many of the posts...appears that I will enjoy the Saito brand. I know I want a four stroke for this plane, just not sure about gas versus glow as well as the size. Thanks in advance!

I have that engine, it is a slightly stretched Saito 62 making it a 66, it starts easily, runs smoothly, idles slowly. Here is your gasoline to oil ratio: I have to write it out, it won't copy and paste correctly.

20 to 1 ratio===6.4 oz. oil to one gallon or 128 oz of gasoline.

it's nice to see you here on the Saito page !

but before I answer your questions first things first, and I think most Saito owners would agree with me here> you should buy 2 Saitos, ,,, even if the 2nd one is used, you should buy 2 Saitos LOL

as for your question,
A) brake it in on the bench for at-least 1/2 gallon, better yet 1 full gallon,
B) I would run it richer than you would for a glow 2 stroke, for 2 reasons,
1) because gas burns hotter than alcohol,
2) because a 4 stroke's Head can run hotter than a 2 stroke's.

Jim, if he breaks it in for a gallon it will take him a year although he'll get to enjoy the joyful Saito sound for a year and it's the season for joyful sounds, Double good advice.

Hi, was just wondering if the FG11 would be enuf for the 60 sz KAOS? Maybe a FG14? 60sz usually would want a larger 4-stroke and gas is a little less efficient than NITRO . Just wondering what ya'll thought.

I would you with the 14. The would not have enough power to really pull the Kaos. Bigger is better and you can always throttle back.

I agree with JimO, the FG11 will fly it, but it's a 60 size plane, and usually a plane that calls for a 60 size 2 stroke calls for a larger 4 stroke, and remember you will have to pull around the ignition and extra battery and extra on/off switch, so I would buy the FG14c (82), it's only $30 more than the FG11, I think you will get more for the money too

KG as a guide gas saito fourstrokes make about 25% less peak power than their same size nitro brothers do,so a 60 size two stroke kit needs an fa91 or fa100 i use an fa115 on my 60 size midget mustang.Factory needle settings are very close so unless you want to run the engine in with a bigger than benchmark recommended prop i'd leave them alone for now until you start flying it.Gas engines have very fine fuel screen filters in them and it causes long term tuning problems which can be frustrating because they quickly begin to clog up the filter screens if you don't religiously strain your fuel properly.Buy a brand new plastic fuel container and a big packet of coffee filters from the supermarket.Pour 500ml of fresh pump gasoline through the coffee filter if you can and you'll see what i mean.

Most saito's,but not all seem to settle down for max rpm after a gallon or two,as dave said you could go on a long holiday,come back,and it's still running.

ps saito says hello (woof woof) to those fortunate souls who are fa125less

I am not so pessimistic about the four stroke power, with a well matched prop the four strokes have just about the same Flying Power. The exaggerated paper two stroke power doesn't provide much more of that.

The gasoline fuel also makes a bit less power than methanol. IIRC, the gasoline version also sports a reduced compression ratio.
The FG-14 would be my choice, but then again ,I would convert it to run methanol instead of gasoline.

Are you suggesting a FA82 with maybe a CH ignition set up . . . or would you prefer the FG pumped carb ? (glow fuel w\spark plug to run less oil, better idle, and increased top end). With spark ign, some do run stock carb for glow or gas fuel.

Dave pessimistic is one of those big words like wheelbarrow,marmalade and rhubarb,i agree with what you are saying re flying power for saito fourstrokes in the air you can see the difference in initial acceleration of the plane.Similar size two stroke power delivery in the air seems quite soft by comparison tho they go like a bat out of hell when you get em wound up.

ps aaagh...ch ignitions and methanol,i can feel a severe case of sr telemaster coming.I hope he's finished his mauser 7x57mm

Some modern day two strokes come with larger prop recommendations, but folks still resist those recommendations.

hey Dave, I have that Saito 82 (and thank you and Captain again for that),, and you know what else I have, well I have a brand spanking new RcX ignition that came with my Z G20 that I was going to use in my heli,,

any hoo, in my link is a plane (kit) I have been wanting, I would like to round all wings and change the tail to make it look like a early 30s plane,, the 82 would with the ignition would be cool in it..

BTE Venture 60
I see, I think.

That looks pretty cool Jim, I had a Saito 72 on a BTE Venture 60 a very similar sized plane. It flew like it was on rails.

It would be nice if Dan still hung out here, he has a lot of good numbers and info on the glow to ignition/glow subject. It's appreciated by most.

Dave, I like the plane, but I didn't realize how lite that plane is, the 82 with battery, and ignition is too heavy

Here is an interesting option since that plane is very Stick like. With the Eureka kit you need to choose and buy most of your own hardware and get the plans printed some where.. The 82 would be perfect on it though.
