RE: Club MAGNUM !
Well, that 52-FS I got in a trade was all out of whack. After disassembling, cleaning, oiling, and reassembling and adjusting the valves I set it up on the test bench today and ran it. It started but it needed to run several minutes before I could get a good tune on the carb. I ended up with HSN @ 1.5 and LSN @1.5 on Powermaster 15% with a Rev-Up 12x5W prop and unknown glow plug (wanted to see if it worked, looks like an F type) and got a peak rpm of 9600 and a reliable idle with glow battery of 2600 rpm. Ran three 10 minutes sessions letting it cool 10 minutes between runs. Did the full power and idle adjustments on the third run.
I think it's going to be an okay engine.

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Hi,
I have the ASP Fourstrokes 70, 91 and 120s and I realise they run much better with APC props! I was using a 14X6 Master Airscrew K-series with the 120 and but felt that it was way underpowered. The moment I changed to a 15X6 APC the engine is like a different animal. Idle was much lower as well. Same case with the 91.

RE: Club MAGNUM !
I have a magnum 52 4 stroke. It ran terrible at first. It would not idle and was impossible to adjust. After about a gallon of fuel it smoothed out and started running very well. It is now easy to adjust and has great transition. I assume that it just needed a longer break-in. I run fuel with a synthetic castor mix.
The instructions for the larger magnum 4 strokes call for pure castor. Has anyone used synthetic castor mix on say the magnum 120 fs?
What were the results?
Larry

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Hi all, I am a fairly new flier ( about 18 months) I have 4 glow fuel planes, 3 electric, and a blade helicopter. I have flown about 10 gallons of fuel this summer, I'm a school teacher and flew almost every morning this summer. I just got my space walker II off the bench after a crash and decided to put a Magnum xls .46 on it. I had quite a few problems with dead sticks the first few flights. I narrowed it down to a leak in the High speed needle valve, fuel was leaking out and I thought that might be the problem. I replaced it with an old needle valve out of an OS 40 LA it worked fine. I do have a few question for some of the ole' pros. First I have a hard time getting the engine to shut off even when I hit my kill switch on my Transmitter, I even put my finger over the carb and it still doesn't always shut off.... Any suggenstions? Second I noticed it seems to run a little lean at times, I can't always see a smoke trail when flying, Im using a 11x5 prop on it and 10% nitro. Should you always see a smoke trail? Finally I noticed that the engine is extremely quiet, I took the muffler apart and to see what it looked like, it had a plate with holes (the baffle?) I read earlier that someone closed half the holes and the engine ran a little richer, is that a good idea, what is the purpose of the plate in the muffler, is it to produce more back pressure for the fuel tank. The last 3 or 4 tanks of fuel I have had no deadsticks it pulls the spacewalker around the sky pretty well but still does not seem to have as much power as my tower .46 that I have in my Avistar.....really tears up the sky, wings will probably rip off or it one of these days. Sorry for the long post but I am full of.......Questions!! Thanks Randy

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Gotta Magnum .32 a .46 XL w/rear needle and a 1.08.
They are all very reliable engines. However from experience learnt from my 1s .46XL (front needle, I sold it last year) I always dismantle the carby on a brand new Magnum before I start it for the 1st time, and inspect the barrel for metal "machine flash".
On my 1st .46, such flash carved a groove on the inside of the carby casing and led to tuning problems with the resultant air leak.
I found similar flash in both the 1.08 and .32 Carby's, but the RN .46 (which was 2nd hand anyway) was clean. However it had problems of its own, with a rubber grommet missing from the High Speed Needle which was the cause air leak problems and its owners frustration.(That's how I got it cheap. Problem soved quickly.)
Now all 3 run very well on 5% Nitro fuel and the .46 with the addition of a Tower. 46/GMS. 47 Tuned Muffler, really screams.
I'm in the market now for a 2nd .46, (why did I sell the FN one? Curses!) but the problem is the current Aust Magnum Distributor is very erratic and Hobby Shops are having no end of problems getting stock.
So I gotta look at other brand's alternatives, or hunt E-BAY.

Just bought and installed my first Magnum engine today... a Magnum .91 4 stroke that I put on my Four Star 60. Gonna break it in and fly her with it tomorrow!

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Hi all. I just moved to Cyprus and found a good hobby shop here, where I purchased an ASP .52. The instruction manual that came with it is only in Chinese. Can anyone point me to an instruction manual or web site? I was looking at the Magnum .52, but that seems to have a round head on it, and mine is square. Also, can anyone recommend a break in procedure for this engine and what props might be good?

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Can I join the Club? My dad just came back from USA and bought a Magnum XL 91AR four stroke. I am pleased to read here that people have nice experiences with Magnum. As some people say "You get what you pay for" this statement is not true. As people have said, the Magnum is a little less powerful than the Saito for the same size but is $140+ cheaper, and better value for money. For all we know Satio might have to sell their engines at a higher price because of more overhead expenses. Also Saito might bump the price up because it recognises people will pay extra to have Saito written on it as people value Saito as a brand.

Myers:
The current Magnum/ASP 5R400 engine is a "Punched out" version of the older 5R300, which was a copy of the OS radial of 3.0 cid size.
I had some experience with the OS version of the engine a few years ago, it was a good running reliable engine, but the fuel rate was much higher than I liked. A 22 ounce tank gave me seven minute flights.
The 5R300 had about the power of a Moki 1.80, I'd estimate the 5R400 should be around the power of the 2.20 two stroke engine.
Magnum/ASP has increased the displacement for greater power with no real increase in weight, I see no reason to think it would be any less reliable than the earlier engines.
If you can stand the fuel cost and bare weight of the engine go for it.
Bill.

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Randy, if you take the Tower Hobby engine muffler and put it on the Magnum 46, the Magnum will be much more impressive.
For sport flying, set the high speed needle on the rich side when tuning on the ground. With a full tank of fuel it should on the verge of 4-cycling. Do you know what that sounds like?
The 11x5 prop should be fine.

The Magnum XLS52 has a round blue head wereas the ASP (S)52 has a square head. They are pretty much the same engine.
Try www.justengines.unseen.org for a ASP manual or a copy of one?
There's a pretty good analysis of a 52S at http://www.justengines.unseen.org/ASP52r.htm
Meanwhile, you can use the Magnum manual. Download it here... http://media.hobbypeople.net/manual/210760.pdf
Enjoy,
Jim

RE: Club MAGNUM !
So what's the secret to getting the 46XLS to shut off? I've tried selaing the back plate and carb with RTV, substituting an OS carb, and wrapping teflon tape around the high speed needle threads. After trying all this I sent the first one back to Magnum because it wouldn't shut off. They very promptly sent me a new one with no question. The new one won't shut off either.

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Richen up the low speed carb adjustment 1/8 turn and see what happens.
(counter clockwise) If necessary, open it up another 1/8 turn.
Does it shut off now ? Remember, each time you adjust the low-end screw
you should recheck the top end adjustment. Peak the engine to maximum rpm,
then open the high speed screw (richen) and set the engine down about 500 rpm's
or so from peak.
You want the low end and the high speed both set slightly rich to keep the engine
cool when it is new.

RE: Club MAGNUM !
As a last resort and to ease your curiosity, if the engine does have an air leak that you haven't found, devise a way to pressurize the engine (through the carb intake), spray WD-40 everywhere, and look for air bubbles. Use very low pressure though, only a couple of lb.

Thanks Guys. I'll try richening the low-speed needle this weekend. I have it set for best transition right now. BTW, I am using the front-mounted needle and I have already backed out the idle stop adjustment. I'll try the bubble test this weekend also - that seems like a great idea.
