RE: Club MAGNUM !
I've just purchased a Magnum 1.20. This is my first 4-stroke, and I was wondering how critical the choke is to the operation of the engine. I'd like to remove it. The manual leads me to believe that I will not need it if I use an electric starter (and I can't imagine starting this thing without one). Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

That is true. The newer Saitos do not have a choke. Plug the exhaust outlet with your finger and flip the prop through a couple of times for a prime.

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Have a 120 FS and am experiencing a problem with front bearing/housing. When cold, there is noticable sideways movement between the front bearing and crankcase. The outer bearing case free spins against the crancase! The inner bearing case is tight on the actual driveshaft. I have an awful feeling I have cooked the engine and caused the crankcase to swell causing the loose fitting of the front bearing . The bearing may have caused wear to the crankcase at it spins.
Any ideas to rectify or will it mean a new crankcase? Some option thrown around was fitting a shim between the bearing and crankcase but I am not too keen on that. Another was an oversized bearing but my enquiries reveal the next commercially available bearing has an outside diameter of 30mm, that is 4mm up from the standard. Too much machining and removal from the crankcase [:@].
Have been using the engine inverted in a P47 with no noticable problems. Good idle, transition up and always starts 1st or 2nd time with reverse flick. Never, never have used starter. In reply to GodaFly the first thing I did was take off the choke.
Happy New Year.

An old trick is to plate the outside of the bearing to fit.
Otherwise you have three options. 1) Keep running it until it wont. 2) replace the crank case. or 3) replace the engine.
I'd just keep running it so long as it's working fine.

Usually if the bearing "spins" in the case it is because it was no good, and locked
up, causing the wear in the case. If the bearing is shot, it will have to be replaced
in any case. If the bearing is loose in the case, clean the case and the outer race
real good with some brake or carb cleaner....then glue the new bearing into the
case with a liberal amount of thick CA. Use a CA kicker to get it all cured.
CA is nothing but a plastic, it will hold the bearing in place no problem. The case
will not get hot enough to soften the CA.
The other option is to replace the case. I would patch it up, and run the snot out
of it.

Get some LOCTITE 641 and follow the instructions to the letter. esp. those relating to prep.
Specifically formulated to fix loose bearings into cases or on to shafts.

The 61 Magnum/ASP/SC has the stroke of the 52 and the bore of the 65. Thengine is in the same case as a 52. The 61's power is closer to that of the 52 than that of the 70. The 61 engine set beside the 52, you wouldn't know which was the 61 until you looked on the side of the case. The reason for the lessor power of the 61 is that it has the 52's valves and carb.
The 70 is in the big size case. It's as big on the outside as the 91. But the mounting lugs have a shorter bolt spacing the same as a OS 70 and the Saito 65, 80, 91 engines. The 70 is actually just a 65 that's been bored out a little. The performance of the 65 and the 70 are pretty much the same.
Enjoy,
Jim

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Thanks Ernie,
That's pretty much what I thought, and have been getting from others. I've attached a few pictures (hopefully). You can see why I needed to get rid of the choke. I'm now right where I am supposed to be.
Take care,
Deral Carson

I have a web pgae with a video of a Magnum 91 RFS powering a Patriotic 4 Star 60. The plane flies very well and has more than enough power using a APC 14x6 prop. Enjoy
