I don't know if some one remember my problem I had with my first Fox ever.
It is a Fox Eagle 1 60 from early 1970 that I found on ebay new in box.

I put it in a Kwick Fli for some real nostalgia.

After a bit of trouble to get it broken in, after some time it worked decent to put it in the air.
I them after about 1 hour of run time fueled it up with Duke's Missle Mist and went flying.
I made a low inverted VOT passthen the engine stopped abruptly and I could not recover and crashed.

I took the engine apart and found out that the rod was hurt and had to much play in the pisston pin, the rod had no bushing at the piston pin only at the crank.
Fox did not have any spare parts so I put it aside.

Last night I started my lathe and a few hours later I had a nice new bushing in the rod and and I messured all the play in the engine and it was real good.

Today I started it for the first time and it was running real good at idle and middle range, but I could only get 8000 rpm's with FAI 80/20 fuel and 9500 with 15% nitro(I always use 20% castor oil)
I run it 2 tanks at 5000 rpm to loose it up if that was the problem, but no it was not.

So I took it apart again and after looking at all parts under magnafying glass and found a pin hole in the casting on the crankcase just under the mounting beam.
I then pressureaise the crankcase and it blew theoug the hole pretty good.

Can this be the reasson for the bad running, I must loos a lot of crank pressure and that can not be good.

Here is pics of my rod
I finally got around to reassembly my engine, no problems everything looks good.
Put it on the bensh and started it with 80/20% FAI fuel, let it get warm on idle for about 5min.
First pull to wot with a 11x7,5 Zinger and a wopping 12.500 rpm's.
Now I'm happy, the engine runs so sweet again after all problems.
I had even restored an 1965 Merco 61 dual plug engine and with the same fuel and prop turned a nice 10.200 rpm's
The merco has a real low and nice idle, I think it's the dubble plugs and small venturi that helps alot.
I also run a 1980 HP Gold Cup 61 ABC engine just for fun, same fuel and prop 13.600 rpm's.

Now I have to let my neighbors rest from all WOT 2 stroke sound and castor smell I love it, am I sick or what

Take care.

Got a nice surprise. I weighed my Fox 45 BB ring. it weighs only 15 oz with my custom enya muffler. Anyone know how the power output measures up. it is an early model with the side bump.

Martensen, you gotta love those Mercos, I have two of the silver .61 single plug engines, the last series before the black ones.any guys didn't understand that they were designed to turn a large prop in the 8,500 to 9,000 rpm range. I also have the .61 gasoline version upgraded with a CH Electronics ignition, the stock ignition was weak and iffy. The little .30 will rival an electric for smoothness. I have black .50 that I have flown quite a lot.

Hobbsy I have 3 silver line dual plug engines, two 61 and one 49.
They newley overhauled 61 will drag my RCM Trainer around with a 12x4.
The nice thing is the low idle and real low noice, and it's easy on fuel.
With my 12 oz tank I will fly for an hour if you don't fly around on full throttle.
I need a piston for my other 61 to make it flyable again.

Take care.

Yep, their bearings are huge compared to others their size. Longevity, great economy, and total reliability was their forte.

Since it is always better to be rich than lean, I would start with two to two and a half turns open on the high speed needle and just leave the low speed needle alone, unless it is obvious that it has been changed from stock (like laying in the box alongside of the engine).

Francis, I have a whole gang of the Fox TN carbs, replaced them with EZJust carbs and MVVS carbs for the Diesels. I could set one up just for kicks and learn ya the results. Little Webra recieved, let me know what I owe you, I already tracked down a piston and liner set for it, new bearings came yesterday from BOCA, 15 bucks free shipping. Many Thanks

Dave,

The Webra is free! I bought eight engines for $50 at an R/C auction.
K&B .61 (baffel piston) runs good
OSFP .40 runs good
OSFP .40 w tower mufler runs good
OSFP .25 runs good
OSFP .25 parts only (piston cyl is tight???)
Webra .40 given to a friend
Tower .40 no compression
Eveloution .46 unknown

Flightlines Solutions used to have the FOX manuals; maybe a call to FOX?

Francis I ran the Fox .60 with the carb pictured, bad engine day at 45 degrees and pouring rain. The HS needle ended up at 1.25 turns out from stop and LS 4.5 turns out from stop.

I wish we lived close together, Hobbsy. It is really difficult finding someone else who shares my engine running aspect of the hobby. I can find plenty of people who want their engines ran and broken-in, which is good, but few of them want to be there when I'm doing it.

Thanks Ed, since I was seeking the approximate number of turns for Francis to start with I made a crude spacer to raise the tank on the PSP to where the tank centerline is about 1/2 inch below the spraybar. Yeah, we'd have a great ole time.

It seems that most folks view engines as some sort of appliance which they wish to ignore as far as possible. I find engines one of the more fascinating aspects of the hobby.

I have been accurately described by fellow club members as only viewing model airplanes as engine holders. I suspect they are correct. <G>

Somebody made me an interesting gift earlier this year. A Fox .07RC. Looks almost like a light weight TT 07, with an exhaust flapper valve for speed control. If it's anything like the first RC engine I bought, a Fox .19 with a rotary exaust valv, it may actually be useable.

The FOX 0.7rc is an enlarged FOX 0.49 or it seems that way. I have two of them at the present time. I am putting one in a Goldberg Jr.Falcon with Galloping Ghost radio.[ duplicating a model that I had in 1968]. If I remember correctly they had two speeds high and idle. The needle is the high adjustment and the low adjustment is on the intake side. If you look the intake nipple has a slot that you can adjust.
In 1968 I ran mone on Missle mist. When I fly this one now I will be using Byron's 25% 1/2A fuel. I have been using it for several years in my 1/2A engines. It works very well up here even in mid winter. With a little attention and adjustment it should be OK.
I do not remember the RPM figures etc. on the engine.
good Luck,

I might use it in my Sterling 1/2A Fledgling. I'm saving the Fox (not-FAI) .049 for a Jetco Tornado FF kit I have in the To-Do Queue. Problem is, with a new grandaughter, and a return to absurd levels of overtime at work, building time is at a premium. In fact, for my Christmas holiday period, I am hoping to build a P-20, Embryo, Grieve, Thompson, and WW-1 Mass Launch for the 2009 FAC competition season. And if my wife has her usual Honey-do list, I'll be lucky to repair hangar rash for last year's fleet. Also want to build something for Rapier rocket FF, or convert one or more of my curent Jetex flet to Rapier. Kind of want to see if I saved the P. G. F. Chinn report on the .07, or maybe the original MAN magazine. I think he rated it about the same power as the .049, but with about a 5 or 6000 rpm idle. Since my experience in adding throttles to .049s usually resulted in loss of 1 or 2000 rpm at top end, the .07 might be a worthwhile addition.

And I can use an unmuffled engine this size at our field. Our lower engine size for muffler is .09.

So many models, so little time!

I have an original Jr. Falcon kit that I bought a while back. I hate to consume it by building it and have thought about buying one of the latest replicants for the actual build. What I should do is look around for some plans that include rib details. Then again, it is constant chord, so all I really have to do is copy one of the ribs in the Jr. Falcon kit. Doh!

I have a Norvel .061 that is ready for a Diesel head (RJL) and a NIB TT .07. Don't know which to use. I'm sure that either would be fine.

I know what you mean. Among some of my older kits, I have a Goldberg Jr. Skylark. I think I had one as my third or fourth RC job about 1963 or 64. F&M Pioneer super regen reciever, Babcock SE-2m escapement, Cox RR-1 engine. Rekitted it before I could get enough downthrust cranked in, but managed to get several 20 or 30 second semi-controlled flights first, between phugoids.

I'm trying to find a wing kit for a Sr Falcon to complete the fuse of one I was given. Might just blow up the rib pattern in my original Falcon 56 (narrow fuse, .09 to .19 engine recommendation) kit plans. Or maybe try to buy the plans from the RCM library site. My fox .50 might be just the thing, with a little beefing up of the structure.

I got an Eagle III from a friendand had a chance to run it today. It was 35 degrees and I was using Omega 10% fuel. It starts easy but the rpm drops noticably when the glow driver is removed. Low power 11,300 RPM with an APC 11x7 prop and the mid range is rich.

I will contact FOX for a low taper low speed needle. A switch from a FOX maracle plug to a K&B 1L w/ idle bar some what reduces the slowdown after removing the glow driver.

The .60 review in MAN showed most .60s running at 13,000 RPM on the same prop.

I swaped the stock head shim for one made from a soda pop can. Might try it tomorow.

Any Ideas?

Francis

Yes use 5% fuel (or 9% it may not run well on any nitro at all) and lean the needle out. Even if you have a rich midrange you should be able to lean out the high end.
