Actually no one makes model engines as their core business anymore. They all do other work and make engines as a filler to keep the employees busy between contract jobs. Even the Chinese companies do the same thing too. I had heard that the Sanye company that makes ASP, MAgnum, and SC engines makes a lot of automobile brake parts. Fox is big into doing government manufacturing contracts too. Way back in 1978 Fox was making sockets for the Sears Craftmans tools line, when I visited the factory at the time. Even MECOA only does engines as a small sideline for their other manufacturing business.

The Fox ABC have no webbing between the ports at least on the Eagle IV's. I have the Eagle IV in both types (ABC/ ring) in both the 60 & 74. My ringed versions have three webs on the 60 and four webs on the 74 when looking at the exhaust port. Mine have no external designation indicating displacement. I always wondered if anyone tried to use a .74 in pattern before the displacement limit was lifted. Not sure of the actual date there. The .74 has an appreciable difference in power by my observation! I really like those .74's.

Way back in 1966 Fox came out with a .74 red head engine to be used as a pattern engine, and shortly after they did the FAI and the AMA limited the engine size to .61 or 10cc. Fox was forced to rework the engine and make it a .60 at the time. Later they bored out the .74 and made it into a .78 which was the biggest model airplane engine at the time until OS started importing some OS .80 engines too. The Fox .60 Blue head and .74 red head both used a great 3 needle carb where you had adjustments for everything. With low, medium, high speed, and throttle stop adjustments. It was definitely a competition pattern plane engine for that era.

Earl, here is a Fox .74 ring sleeve with punched ports and an ABC sleeve, the ABC .74 sleeve has been run almost entirely as a Diesel and turns a Graupner 12x8 three blade at 9,500/ EZJust carb.

Back in 1972 I was stationed at Korat AB in Thailand. They had a hobby shop on base with a limited selection of kits and engines. I picked up a Little Stick and I am sure I used a Fox .29 R/C. I have never seen a used one on EBay. Just wondering if anyone has one of these? Picture?

Fox had just come out with the .29RC in 1972. SO it might look like this then.
more about them here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1164366
I think the .29 wasn't as popular as the .36RC engine though, mainly people would tend to lean towards the larger displacement engine unless they had a competition event they were getting one for. But the .29 was, sort of, a hop up for a .20 size plane during that era.

There are three versions, iron piston, ringed, and ABC. I believe the ABC is the deluxe. Not sure which the other two are.

Thanks.

I've never owned a fox. Usually buy my engines from MECOA. It would be nice if Fox would at least have a desription of their engines. Want to compete with the Chinese and Japanese?
As they state on their website, they do outside work. I guess this is probably not their core business anymore.

You need to call them to get their full discount anyway, so ask. Also motors are available that are not on the website.

Did anyone other than OS do only model engines? Fox started doing contract machine work in the 50's I believe.

Many of the OS fsr series of mufflers fit Fox's. I know the Eagle III (60) & IV ( 60/ 74) can use the OS #744 muffler ( Rossi 60 and MVVS 10cc Share the same dimensions I think as well). I know the Fox 45 could use the OS # 743 ( 40-45fsr). Those I have and have tried, so I know they work. I'm sure there are others that I don't know about. I know early ASP's shared alot of fsr dimensions.

I have a .74 and have run it with both the EZcarb and the new TN carb. Yesterday I was bench testing it with 15% nitro and comparing performance between and 13x6 prop and a 12x6x3 blade. The 3-blade spun a bit faster. I also compared the stock tilt-up muffler with the MVVS Quiet muffler. The performance of the mufflers were roughly similar (I need to do more testing because the muffler bolt got loose). The MVVS muffler was much quieter and is extremely lightweight. I was getting around 11500 rpm with the 12x6x3 blade.
I already have an ARF plane ready for assembly and I plan on installing the Fox .74 in it. I won't get to fly it until next Spring though.

OS manufactures stuff for things other than model engines too. They just don't talk about it much.

If I remember correctly, they had some contracts to make parts for Japanese cars and some other stuff too.

You cannot spend millions of dollars on CNC equipment and not use the heck out of the things.
Anything that will help pay for the loans, employee wages, rent and put food on the table is what a company will do.

Thanks erlwb, I was worried about my memory. Apparently I'm not that old yet. Yes, that looks like the one I had. I wasn't using an APC prop back then though. Just for a kick, I would love use a Fox .29 on the Little Stick short kit I had cut from LaserWorks. It sure would bring back a lot of memories of that flying field back in Thailand. I just have not seen one for sale on Ebay. Have included a picture of my self back then holding a Jr Falcon that was flown with a Mattel single channel radio and a Babe Bee .049 engine. Looking at this old photo, I can see my memory was a little off. It was 1974, not 72.

rrengineer, I have some FOX .36 RC engines but I don't think I have a .29 RC FOX engine. At the time I bought several of them when I was visiting the Fox factory in 1978. Fox used to sell "factory second" engines to the locals real cheap. After Mr. Duke Fox passed away they discontinued the practice.
Pm me if you are interested.

I think I have a Fox 36, as well. No muffler, but with a Perry Carb. Going all much larger now, so that one would be available

That engine looks tiny for a 36. Looks like a long stroke. How does it perform?

Have not run it as most of my stuff is much larger and don't have a test stand. Besides that, it would probably be pretty loud!

As for the guess on size, I originally thought this was a 25 when I picked it up this time last year. I posted pics here and was told it was more likely a 36. As you can see from this pic there is no stamped ident. Perhaps the angled plug helps point out which it is?

The Fox .29 and .36 work pretty good as a hop up for a .20 size plane with a .19,.20, or .25 baffled engine in it. The crankcase was a little wider, meaning you had to change out the motor mount in some cases, but it depends on the plane and engine brand though. Now if you had a modern Schneurle .25 or something, it would outperform the old engines, but otherwise they run pretty good and develop good power. But not like the modern engines though.

The Macs one piece mufflers for OS 25's work Ok on the Fox .29 and .35's and 36's. You'll need plugs and a hose clamp on the versions without muffler screw holes. here is one shown on my old Sureflite foamie Cessna with a Fox .36Rc engine on it. the Fox engine actually fit the motor mount that came with the kit, which was designed for a .19 to .20 engine originally.

Yahoo! Think I just found a mount for the Eagle IV. Heading out this morning to pick up a Great Planes F-15 Eagle. Think the matching monikers was a hint.

You are lucky you found a kit, they discontinued them a while back.
But that ought to make for a great combo, should go good too.

I wonder what the special sale is going to be on Monday October 24th? Maybe 40% off perhaps? I will make sure I check it out Monday. I am thinking about getting the .60.
