Availability of YS 1.10FZ Engines
Seems everybody (that I checked with) is sold out and many places dont know when they'll have stock. Anybody know why ?
I'm trying to decide on which engine to stick on my GP Skybolt bipe and if this shortage is going to last long I'll be considering something else.....
Any info is appreciated.

I got curious and put together a quick table to compare the OS120Surpass, OS91Surpass, SaitoFA-100, and YS1.10FZ so I could compre them on price, weight, and power. I cant seem to find any power numbers for the YS.
OS120 = 1.9 HP
OS91 = 1.6 HP
Saito100=1.8 HP
YS1.10= ???
(these numbers are from distributor web-sites so they may not be "real"....)
From experience with these engines where do you guys think the YS falls ?
So far the Saito is looking very attractive...

YS is a relatively small company and it has limited production capabilities. Combine that with being popular and you end up with a product that is frequently sold out.
The Skybolt has a reputation of coming out tail heavy and with an estimated weight of 9+ lbs IMO the YS110 would be a better choice for this plane than the Saito 100. I have had a Saito 100 for some time and just got a YS110. Both are great engines, but despite having close to the same displacement, the YS is much stronger. A lot depends on how you intend to fly the plane.
If you want a YS you can contact a dealer and get on a waiting list, pre-order, or keep an eye out for the arrival of their next order. The 110 has been selling out within a few days once it gets in stock.

I have a YS 110.
Using a 16x6 APC it develops about 12.5-13 lbs of thrust on 20/20 fuel at over 9000 rpm. You get closer to 13 with no muffler, or an opened up muffler.
Flatter prop will probably do even more.
IMO For ease of use, 36% less cost, 33% more power, 3 oz less weight, and lower fuel costs, I would go 2 stroke OS 91 if I had to do it again. I have spent well over $400 on it to date due to repairs at the factory and other parts costs. The OS would have left me with almost $200 to pay for a perry or other fuel pump system; the only real reason I bought the YS in the first place.

Because the power band on a 2-stroke is higher, you just use a different prop turning at a higher RPM. The 91 is rated at 2.8 hp @ 15,000. The torque curve is way different. I am not sure about peak thrust meausurements (I would love to see em) for 3D applications, but the 4W pitch (wide) props should do well to convert this RPM to more static thrust / torque.
Regardless, if this isn't enough, the OS 2 stroke 1.08 is 3hp and can swing up to an 18x6 and is still lighter, and cheaper. I cant imagine that you couldn't get the same power from that as the YS 110 with the right prop.

Here is some data on another thread for the 1.08. As you can see, turning a 16.6 prop it gets 2.2 pounds more thrust than I can get with the 110. This is an overkill engine but again still cheaper and no heavier.

Here is the data on a OS 91FX.
Judging from this, an APC 16x6 must be very close to the 9000 mark, and YS output. Just different torqe behavior at part throttle. I am still thinking about going with the 1.08 and cheap-o 10% sport fuel. I wonder if any magazines reviewed the 1.08 yet.
