Default Books?

Can anyone recommend any books on 2-stroke theory, operation, modification, etc for the rc hobby?

Dan:

Best ever is Phil Irving's "Tuning for Speed." It's written for motorbikes, but all the information applies to model two strokes just as much.

But a big problem, if your modelengine has ABN sleeve, you can not tune engine if you want to change timing to example modificate the ports. The nickel will peel off..

You can tune the ABN engine with tuned pipe..

There is a book written by Dave Gierke and sold by Model Airplane News that is real good.

Then they print one that is more of a getting started book.....

Enjoy,

Jim

i just saw that Barnes & Noble carries the Gierke book for less, especially since I have a discount with them. I'll give that book a go. Thanks!

Great, glad you found it. Dave is one of the all time greats in model engines. He lives in the Buffalo, NY area and has had many articles in Model Airplane News over the years. I'm sure you will enjoy the book.

Enjoy,

Jim

w8ye,

I remember Gierke was to have been working on a new book. I see the second book you listed is from 2005 but I thought the one he said he was working on was more of an advanced one not necessarliy for beginners. Is that one you listed the only new one has has out or coming out(meaning I didnt remember right)??

Those two are the only ones listed by Model airplane news to my knowledge. I'll go back and look....

I could not find the Volume 2 anywhere. It must not be out yet?

The definitive 2 stroke reference is....

Two-stroke Tuner's Handbook (Paperback) 1987
by Gordon Jennings $125.00

At Amazon

As I recall, when Dave G gets in depth he stops less than 1/4" down from the surface. My menory could be faulty, or the book could be a surprise to me.

Phil Irving, on the other hand, not only covers alterations of port timing, types of ports and why, he goes into exhaust and intake resonances (tuning) with straight pipes, megaphones including reverse cone devices, and expansion chamber types, what we refer to as "Tuned Pipes."

Amazon:

Of course, at $45 it might be a little more than the ordinary enthusiast might want to spend...

Still the best one available that I know of.

If you arent very technically inclined, Two Stroke Tuners Handbook by Gordon Jennings. Its the best. I think its also available as an e-book. Do a search on Google.

Its for motorcycles but has all the basics you need to know.

If you want the ultimate or are a hardcore techie you could go in for Prof. GP Blair's "Design & Simulation of Two Stroke Engines", considered by many as the bible for two stroke tuning.
