I have an MDS .38 which was my 1st model engine I used on my trainer about 3 yrs ago. Was always a reliable engine.
After a long dry spell of not flying, I installed radio gear back into my old trainer to re-learn to fly again without destroying a good plane. Engine ran pretty good.
I built a Dazzler kit just to have a ride for the .38, now, it is a completely different engine. I set the needles to run perfectly and a few hrs later, it wont even run without resetting all over again, nearly cost me the plane landing dead stick in 15 mph breeze.
I know its just a cheap small engine, but, I hate to trash it if its salvageable.
Ive replumbed, replaced plugs, tried changing fuel, any suggestions, other than replacing?
Ive spent days trying to adjust the carb., must be something else, or a bad carb.?

Sounds like you might have dirt in the carb. Take out the high speed needle and pump fuel through the carb. This might flush out the the carb. If that doesn't work, you might have to take the carb apart and clean it.

Jim, I never thought about the clunk.
I sold the plane to an older member of the club who wanted it, but, I kept the engine.
Before I go to the trouble of building another plane just for that engine, I just wanted to see if its even worth using.
Im going to set it up on a test stand thurs and tinker with it some more.
Thanks, Roger
